“What would you like to order?” a voice says.
Macy stands there, tablet in hand. She’s been a waitress here since she graduated high school ages ago. She and Coach Abberton were friends and they gave my mom and the rest of the gang a hard time. She hates her job and used to frown a lot, and she always gave the Four Musketeers and their families a hard time when they came here. But it’s not as bad as it used to be.
After we order burgers, fries, and drinks, she walks away.
Miss Lane talks about Edenbury as we wait for the food to arrive. She tells Chase how much she fell in love with the town when she was hired as the theater director a few years ago. He listens to every word she says like they’re the water he desperately needs.
The awkwardness is still there, but it’s not as bad as it was before. Here’s hoping things work out and the two of them will be kissing the living daylights out of each other soon.
Macy returns with our food and we dig in. Declan looks at me with a raised brow and I nod. We need to come up with excuses to leave them alone without making it too obvious.
We quickly finish our burgers, and I excuse myself to go to the bathroom. Because I know Mikey’s inside out, I know the perfect place to hide and spy on them without anyone seeing us.
I know, I know. Spying is wrong. But as their matchmakers, we need to know how things are progressing. I’m pretty sure Chase or Miss Lane won’t tell us anything.
The hiding place is behind a tall plant that’s a few inches away from the wall. It’s a tiny space to squeeze into, but there’s enough room for two people. And because the plant is very thick, it’ll do a good job of hiding us.
I whip out my phone and call Declan, pretending to be someone important. He answers, then excuses himself to take the call. I tell him to meet me behind the plant near their table.
“Mia?” he hisses as he passes. I stick my hand out and drag him into the tiny space between the wall and plant.
I miscalculated how muscular the dude is. Because there’s so little room, we’re squished against each other. His chest is pressed to mine and he doesn’t quite know what to do with his arms. He wraps them around me, holding me securely.
Wow. I feel so protected.
His delicious scent enters my nose and this weird calmness washes over me. I’ve smelled him before, but because he’s so close to me, it’s much stronger and mmm. He smells really good.
“Is this okay?” he whispers.
I look up, staring into his beautiful eyes. He took off his sunglasses before he hid in here. His head is lowered and mine is raised and I notice our lips are close. A bit too close.
“Yeah, it’s fine.” I try to turn my head, but it’s really hard to move here. “Sorry, I thought there was more room.”
He chuckles, and because my body is smashed to his, I feel it rumbling all over. My head rests on his chest and I feel just how strong and muscular it is.
“You work out?” I blurt.
He looks down at me. “What?”
“Do you work out?”
“Yeah. I’ve been to the gym a few times.”
“Cool.”
He presses his finger to his lips, motioning toward Chase and Miss Lane’s table. We need to keep quiet or we’re done for.
They’re close enough that we can hear their conversation. They’re reliving their high school days, laughing as they eat.
My hands that were at my sides somehow snake around his waist to give us more room. His are still closed around me, holding me tightly.
Who would have imagined I’d be literally centimeters away from Declan Hart? I kind of…like it.
“I need to text Chase and tell him we went to a party. That way, they won’t be suspicious where we are,” Declan says.
“Okay.”
It’s a bit of a struggle for him to reach into his pocket for his phone. Every time he moves his hand, he nearly whacks his elbow into my head or the plant or wall.
