We reach the movie theater. Since it’s a Saturday afternoon, there are quite a lot of people here. Families with kids, couples on dates. A few are holding hands as they either wait in line or chat on the side.

Kade and I get in line and scan the options.

I point to the list of romance movies. “Okay, so those are out. There’s a heavy fantasy movie that’s very similar to Swords and Legends. Ugh, they completely ripped it off. Lily, Xavier, Chloe, and Liam would be so upset. So would Mason and Rylee.”

He twists his nose. “What’s Swords and Legends?”

“A very popular fantasy TV show. I saw an episode or two, but couldn’t get into it. I mean, fantasy is okay, but I think I’d rather go with an action movie.”

He gestures at the screen. “Got a few to choose from.”

“What looks good to you?”

He shrugs. “I’m fine with whatever. You pick.”

The more action the better because I want to stay as far away from romance as possible. After weighing the different options, I find one that I think we’ll both enjoy. “What do you think about that one?” I ask him. “Looks like many cars will be blown up.” And I doubt there will be any kissing or awkward scenes in there.

“Sounds good.”

Our turn finally comes and we pay for our tickets. Then we head for the concession stand to get some food.

“Popcorn,” we say at the same time.

I look at him and he looks at me and then we burst out laughing. His eyes get so small and I realize this is the first time I’ve seen him laugh this hard. His smile makes something twist inside me, but in the best way possible.

He’s still laughing when he says, “We must be psychically connected.”

“Oh my gosh, don’t get me started. If Rylee knew we said the same thing at the same time, she’d say…” My eyes widen. That we’re written in the stars.

“She’d say what?”

He has no idea what my friends were talking about during lunch the other day. Good thing I managed to get my friends to hush up before they said something they were totally wrong about. And good thing Kade didn’t press for an explanation.

“Nothing,” I quickly say. “We’d better get our snacks before the movie starts.”

He nods and we stand in line.

“Think we should share a tub of popcorn?” I ask. “I don’t think I can finish a whole thing on my own.”

“Sure. I don’t mind sharing.”

When it’s our turn, we get a huge tub of popcorn, plus candy, chocolate, and other things. I glance down at our stuff and laugh. “I think we overdid it.”

“No big. We can take home whatever we don’t eat. Honestly, I’m not much of a junk food person, so you can have all of it.”

“No way. It’s like a rule to eat junk as you watch a movie.”

“A rule?”

“Yes.”

“Okay, then. I’ll take it all.”

He reaches for my snacks with his free hand, careful not to drop the popcorn.

I pull them away. “Hey! No touching my snacks.”

He snatches my M&M’s and dashes into the theater.
