I glanced at Elanya. In fact, I was there for quite the opposite. But I didn’t want to spoil that for her. Not yet.
“He is to pass unharmed,” the woman told the colonel, speaking from the side of her mouth, her eyes laser focused on me. “Escort them if you wish. That is your prerogative. But as long as he harms no one, you aren’t to stop him. However, if he’s here for a second more than three hours or does anything destructive, then you are fully authorized to find out if his human form is as tough as the dragon one.”
I grinned. “I wouldn’t hope for miracles, but we’ll be good, I promise.”
“Fine,” the colonel hissed. “But I want that order in writing.”
“Of course,” the woman official said, rolling her eyes. “After you, dragon.”
With Elanya tucked into my arm, we walked through the razor wire and through the bunker until we emerged on the far side.
“What the hell is this all about?” she whispered, pressing tighter against me under the hard gaze of hundreds of soldiers and their guns. “Did you really have to just bull your way through like that? What do you need in that building so badly?”
I grinned. “Me? Oh, I don’t need anything in there,” I told her.
“Huh? Then why did you bring us here?” she shook her head. “Please tell me you didn’t go all macho just to try to impress me?”
“No,” I assured her.
“But you enjoyed it.” There was mild reproach in her tone.
I shrugged. “Only because they were being assholes.”
“You would be, too, if a being you knew you had almost no hope of stopping was being an ass.”
“I wasn’t being an ass.”
Elanya looked up at me with raised eyebrows. “Seriously? Yes, you were, Damon, and you know it. I saw the way you made your eyes light up to intimidate him. You didn’t have to do that.”
I sighed. “Okay, maybe not. But he was an ass, too.”
“Did you hear me say otherwise?” she said as we paused outside the building.
Behind us, a squad of soldiers formed, watching us warily. I ignored them as best I could.
“Perhaps not,” I admitted. “I’m sorry. I just had to make sure we got here. Otherwise, everything would be ruined.”
“What would be ruined?” she asked, curiosity getting the better of her.
“You’ll see,” I said, reaching for the door and pulling it open.
“Huh?”
“Go on in,” I said, not bothering to hide my grin. “They’re waiting for you.”
“They?”
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Elanya
“SURPRISE!”
I reeled backward under the force of the cry, only vaguely aware of the shouts from the soldiers behind me as they reacted to the outburst of noise. I was too busy focused on what was going on inside the ground floor of the office building.
Where my family waited for me.
In seconds, I was mobbed by loved ones as they rushed forward, surrounding me, sweeping me up in a wave of hugs and back slaps and even a few cheek kisses.
