The hand came free of my back, moving toward my pants.

“Wait,” I made myself say, shuddering in his grip as I brought everything to a screeching halt. “I can’t.”

Both hands disappeared from me in an instant. Cold reality rushed in, puckering my skin with goosebumps as I looked down, not able to meet his eyes right away.

“What is it?” Damon asked, worry coloring his tone. “What did I do wrong? I thought …”

“Shhh,” I said, biting my lip, giving myself three breaths to compose myself, and my thoughts. “You didn’t do anything wrong, Damon.”

“Then why did we stop? I can smell your arousal. I felt it in your body, in the way you clutched at me, right up there until the end.” He shook his head slowly. “I don’t get it.”

“Because—” I broke off suddenly, thinking it through, searching for the right words to explain why. I hadn’t thought I was going to, so now my brain had to scramble to keep up with my actions. There was a reason.

Wasn’t there? We’d already fucked. Several times in the same night, even. I knew it was good. No, not good. Mindblowing. Which was probably why the hunger between my legs wasn’t dying down as quickly as I wished. My subconscious knew that if I let him, he would ensure I received as much pleasure as I could handle. He was that good.

So, why did I stop? Everything I could come up with suddenly seemed silly. There was no reason to stop. It was just some good adult fun.

My head came up, answers falling into place. “I stopped because I can’t just think about having fun anymore, Damon. If I’m pregnant, as you—and the missed periods—say I am, then I need to start thinking about more than fun.”

He cocked his head. “And how does having sex with me a second—or fifth—time change that?”

“I …” Okay, that was a good counterpoint. He was right. I couldn’t get more pregnant. I was already trapped in the dragon realm against my will. What sort of harm could some more mind-blowing sex have?

“It’s about my mindset,” I explained. “I have to think more responsibly.”

He recoiled slightly, face falling. “Am I not responsible? I already told you I’ll be there.”

“I don’t mean to hurt you,” I said, patting his shoulder. “But the truth is, Damon, your word is all I have to go by.”

“Huh?”

“I barely know you,” I told him. “Like, at all. We met once two months ago. The sex was unreal. Trust me, on a physical level, I want more.”

His face brightened considerably at that.

“But other than that, I just learned you’re a dragon shifter. Which I didn’t know. So, the question is, what else is there about you I don’t know? I see a darkness in your eyes, deep in there, and I have no idea what it’s about. Just like I don’t know anything else about you. I don’t even know your favorite food. Your favorite color. Do you have a family? What do you do for work or a job or whatever? Friends? What are your thoughts on a million different issues.”

“Oh.”

“What I’m saying is, I don’t actually know you. And we’re going to have a baby. That part I can’t change, you understand. You will be its father. But if we’re going to be a family, then we need to have an actual relationship. Which means getting to know one another. A relationship that isn’t based just on awesome sex. That’s a good thing to have, but I need more. Does that make sense?”

He nodded solemnly. “Absolutely.”

“Okay, good,” I said, sagging slightly in relief. “I don’t want you to think I’m trying to cut you out of our child’s life. Or my life, for that matter. It’s just that if there’s going to be a ‘you and me’ on top of ‘you, me, and our child’, then that’s going to take time. I just need you to understand that. I’m not saying no.”

“You’re just saying not yet,” he said, breaking out into a lopsided grin that did all sorts of things to my stomach.

“Exactly,” I managed to get out.

“I stand by my other words, though,” he said, stepping a little closer. “I’m not going to let anyone be alone. Not you and not our child.”

His hand caressed my stomach lovingly, and I smiled up at him, seeing the wonder filling those blue eyes as he stared at it.

“What have you done?” a voice hissed in abject fury as Jaklin came around the corner of the hallway.
