“Oh, really?” Jaklin turned a raised eyebrow on her. “Is that so?”

“Yes,” I said. “It’s a long story. The point is, she’s here now, and I thought maybe—”

“You thought what? That I might meet her and realize just because you wanted to stick your dick in her, she’s worthy of even stepping foot on our land?”

I sighed.

“Why is she here?” Jaklin demanded acidly.

“I’m showing her around,” I growled, losing some of my composure. Several of the children stepped back as they heard it, recognizing my anger lurking beneath the sound. “This is part of it. I thought that maybe my sister would understand and could be polite for the short time we’re here.”

“Humans don’t belong here,” she whispered. “Get that through your head, brother. Before you make an even bigger mistake.”

“Whatever.” I turned to Elanya. “Come on, I’ll show you around the school. Then we can go elsewhere.”

“Sounds lovely to me.”

We headed toward the school. Halfway there, a weight landed on my back.

“Gotcha!” one of the schoolkids shouted.

A second weight attached itself to my left leg. Then a third hit the right.

“We’ve got him! Get him!” someone shouted as a battle cry.

A flow of kids descended on me. I roared, picking one up and shaking him before tucking him under an arm. “You’re mine now, little one! Muwahaha,” I chortled, taking a step forward, dragging two kids along with me.

“Don’t let him take me!” the child under my arm shouted, struggling to get free. “He’s got me!”

“And what a yummy snack you’ll make!” I bellowed, tickling him under the arms, while more kids leaped on me, trying to take me to the ground. “I’ll eat you all up!”

The kids laughed and screamed as I started picking them up one by one, only to lightly pin them to the ground. Then they all jumped on my back and shoulders, forcing me to kneel.

“We’ve almost got him!” one screamed.

I laughed—a genuine thing—as we went tumbling down. My hands found exposed bellies and armpits, the backs of knees and under the neck, and the kids shrieked and pulled back, only to dart in when I switched my attention.

“You’ll never get me!” I chortled, eventually rising to my feet.

“He’s free! Run!” someone shouted, and the kids bolted.

I took off after some of them. With the war ongoing and all the missions I’d conducted during it, over a year had passed since I’d last been at the school. It was nice to let myself be. It felt good to jog around the yard, chasing them. To play.

I didn’t realize I still had this in me, I thought as the game died down and Jaklin called the kids back over to continue their lessons.

What else had I lost in the madness of the war and being the sovereign’s assassin?

“I thought you said you didn’t know anything about kids,” Elanya said as the doors closed behind us, trapping the kids outside with my sister while we wandered the halls.

“I don’t,” I said with a frown.

“Then what the heck was all that?” she asked, pointing. “You were awesome. They love you.”

“That was just playing,” I said with a shrug. “They’re good kids, even if most of them thought I was her mate the first time I came by.”

“Mate?” Elanya asked. “You say that like it’s a person, not an action.”

“Because it is,” I said. “Dragons mate for life. It’s a big deal once you find that person, the being who drives your dragon wild.”
