I’d been so busy thinking about myself and my own self-sabotaging feelings that I hadn’t once thought about how Weston must have felt.

Maybe he didn’t want to leave either.

Maybe he needed this, needed me just as bad as I needed him.

So I decided in that moment, that even if this ended in flames, that for the time being I would be everything he needed. For however long it lasted.

Because against all odds, I loved this man.

“Fine. Grab your phone,” I instructed.

Weston’s lips tweaked up in the corner.

“I like you bossy, you know,” he said, his voice husky as he stopped petting the little motor in my arms, sliding out his phone. He cast me a dark, sexy look that made my stomach flip.

I spouted off my address, keeping my face devoid of emotion. As far as he knew, it was just another restaurant in town, a café, or something like Bernard’s. After all, Weston didn’t spend much time here, so there was no way for him to know the address I’d given him was actually my house.

“Meet me there at say... seven o clock?” I asked, sternly but also just in case he actually did have some sort of plans or business dinner.

He smiled sexily in return.

“It’s a date,” he said, just as a group of teenage girls caught sight of the kittens, running over with loud, shrieking squeals.

“It’s a date,” I said as he walked away, smiling from ear to ear.

And it’s going to be the best date ever.

CHAPTER 31

Weston

I thought there had to be some mistake. Though Cade had been secretive about where he’d picked, a part of me thought I must have genuinely misheard him. Because when my Uber showed up to a quaint, little brick house complete with a white picket fence and lawn gnomes in the front yard, I was sure I had to have missed something.

Instinctively, I pulled out my phone to double check the message, as I texted Cade to tell him I was about five minutes away. But just as I queued up my messenger to tell him I’d be a few minutes late because my driver had obviously taken a wrong turn, I saw him.

Standing on the porch in a blue polo, hands in his dark wash jeans, with a smirk.

The little brat.

He’d actually gotten one over on me, and I let out a small chuckle in the space of the car. I slid my phone back in my pocket before leaving the car, taking my time to walk up the sidewalk until I’d reached his porch.

“Are you taking me somewhere special?” I teased him.

Cade cocked his head to the side as he set his hand on my hip, tugging me closer.

“Of course. You deserve only the best, right?” Cade teased me back.

I slid my arm around his waist, pulling him closer to me. His bright blue eyes sparkled with mischief and I was powerless to resist crushing my lips against his with appreciation. He tasted like strawberries and champagne, and it was divine.

“Starting the party without me?” I purred against his soft lips.

Cade gazed up at me with intrigue.

“I can’t help that every time I know I’m going to see you, I get a little nervous.”

My heart lifted at his words.

They were honest, endearing, and carried a hint of vulnerability I’d never known anyone to exhibit to me romantically before.
