My entire body stiffened as her words hit me.

Two more events?

I was only aware of the one...

“I’m sorry, since when were there three events, total?” I asked, slightly panicked.

“It was always in the air, so we didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up, but if the first event was successful, then Rhodes agreed to do two more across town. One in Paradise and one in Deer Park.”

I breathed out a long sigh and nodded in understanding.

“So you want me to go down to Rhodes Enterprises and sell them on the idea of two more events.”

Diane smiled, the sight lighting up the corners of her eyes and I knew I couldn’t say no. Especially if the outcome meant more money and help for the hospital.

Maybe Weston would be there. Perhaps I could apologize for being so curt this morning.

What are the actual chances Weston will be there?

And even if he is, the place is probably huge. The chances are slim...

Still, I knew a slim chance was better than no chance at all, right?

“I mean, who can resist this face?” Diane said as she picked up the hospital’s resident cat, Susie, snuggling her close. Susie had the audacity to look at me with her big, glossy kitten eyes, purring up a storm.

I pursed my lips, sighing in defeat.

Fine.

“When do I leave?” I deadpanned.

Diane smiled as Susie blinked her eyes shut. “The meeting is at two, so I suggest you leave after I come back from lunch at one.”

I sighed, nodding as I checked the book for the day.

At least I’ll get some time in doing my actual job.

CHAPTER 18

Cade

When I arrived at Rhodes Enterprises, I couldn’t help but feel nervous.

The building stood out like a sore thumb, all sleek and shiny against the sunlight and greenery like an ominous, super-hero villain lair.

Does Batman work here too?

But if I was being honest with myself, it wasn’t the building that had my stomach doing flips. It was the thought of seeing Weston, heir to the Bat Cave I stood in front of.

The inside of Rhodes Enterprises was just as shiny and futuristic, but then again, I would expect nothing less of a tech company like Rhodes.

“Can I help you?” an even, calm voice asked.

I turned to see a woman behind the lumbering metal desk, which was so shiny I could actually see my reflection in it.

“Um, yeah, actually... I, uh... I’m here from the Jasper Springs Pet Hospital,” I said, clearing my throat, hoping to dredge up some confidence or semblance of bravado like Weston.

Instead, I chewed my lip as thoughts of the man pervaded me, of him in his sexy suit, latching his expensive watch and smiling that patented aristocratic smile men like him usually had.
