“However, I’ve gotten her to agree to let me continue keeping her safe. In exchange, I’m to withhold information about her whereabouts from everyone, including you. I will check in every twenty-four hours.”
“What? No. Put her on the phone.”
I winked at her. “You can try calling her directly, but I doubt very much she wishes to speak with you right now, sir. I’ll check in tomorrow.”
I hung up before he could reply.
Avery’s wide smile told me she was pleased with my response. Her phone lit up almost immediately. As I expected, she sent it to voicemail.
“Where we’re heading, you won’t have Internet or much of a cell signal.”
She typed out a text. “Terrific. For the next few days, the last thing I want to be is connected. Where are we going, by the way?”
“Somewhere nobody would look for you.”
