“I’m gentle with her, I promise!” I insisted.

“Sometimes,” Nadine added.

We couldn’t stop laughing, and the sex jokes lasted another hour. It was midnight by the time we decided to call it a night.

“We can’t eat anymore, so what’s the point?” Nadine joked.

“I’m not ready for bed,” Grant complained.

“Maybe we can move this party into another room,” Talia said lowly, with a wiggle of her eyebrows.

“We all heard that!” Mandy shouted from near the door as she gathered her things.

“I don’t care!” Talia laughed.

“If you guys want to go back to our room, I’ll stay here with Nadine,” I offered. The truth was, there was no place I’d rather be. Our twin-sized beds weren’t really big enough for two people, but I sort of preferred it that way. I loved sleeping close to Nadine.

“Keep us updated,” Talia said. “Let us know when you’re both out of surgery.”

“We will,” Nadine promised.

Our friends left us alone in Nadine’s room, and we got changed and ready for bed. We snuggled in close to one another, and Oliver and Isa curled up at our feet.

“Thank you for this wonderful night, Lucas,” Nadine whispered blissfully.

I curled my arms even tighter around her. “Of course. I just want to make you happy.”

“I hope that’s not why you’re giving me your kidney. You know I’ve always been happy with you, right? Even when I was sick. The transplant isn’t going to change that. It’s only going to change my body.”

“I know that,” I said, but I wasn’t sure I did know until she said it. I knew she loved me, but it was a whole other feeling knowing she was happy with me. It made my heart sing, and I fell into a deep, peaceful slumber.

I woke up the next morning feeling incredible. I must’ve stirred a little, because Nadine stiffened in my arms.

“Everything all right?” she asked.

“It’s great,” I told her. “There’s no better feeling than waking up next to you in the morning. I want to do it every morning, to be with you all the time.”

“That’d be great, wouldn’t it?”

“Hey, after today, a piece of me will be with you all the time,” I teased.

She gave a light chuckle. “It will, won’t it? I really am the luckiest girl in the world.”

Nadine propped herself upright and planted a kiss on my lips. It was light at first, but neither of us wanted it to stop. I wrapped a hand around her neck and drew her closer. She pressed her lips against mine harder, and I pulled her on top of me. Nadine’s tongue slid inside my mouth, while my hands roamed over her perfect ass—

I forced myself to draw away. “This isn’t great for my blood pressure.”

Nadine snickered. “No, the doctors wouldn’t be too pleased about that, would they?”

“We should probably stop before things get too out of hand,” I suggested. I didn’t know how I managed, because all I wanted was to take her right here, right now.

“Technically the doctor didn’t say anything about this kind of activity,” Nadine pointed out. “But you’re probably right. Just to be safe.”

I rolled Nadine over again and got out of bed. My whole body seemed to buzz with energy, and I couldn’t tell if I was excited or nervous. It had to be a bit of both. Call me crazy, because I was thrilled to be giving up one of my kidneys for her. Maybe it was selfish, because it made me feel like the hero, but I wanted nothing more than to help her.

We got ready and headed to the hospital together. They led us into a room with two beds, and the doctors came in and went over the procedure one more time.

“We’ll take Lucas into surgery first. We’ll make two holes in your abdomen, which we’ll insert cameras into to inspect the kidney. If all looks well, we’ll make another incision for the surgical probe to cut out the donor kidney. We’ll isolate it and cut the blood vessels, and we’ll take the kidney out of an incision in your belly button. This procedure will take about forty minutes. By then, Nadine will be prepped for surgery, and we’ll place the new kidney into her body through the abdomen. It will sit lower than your other kidneys and attach to blood vessels near your leg. Your old kidneys will remain in the body, but the new kidney will take over function. Are you absolutely certain you want to go through with this? Once the procedure begins, there’s no turning back.”
