He watched as all the color drained from Cassie’s face.
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
CHAPTER 24
Cassie couldn’t get out of her mom’s house fast enough. She couldn’t believe her mother had said that.
Okay, yes, she could. Her mom had basically said the same thing to her in the kitchen, but Cassie couldn’t believe she’d said it to Jesse.
They’d been dating for less than a month. Couldn’t her mom give them at least six months or so before bringing up kids?
She ran a hand over her face as Jesse slid into the driver’s seat beside her. He’d been good about it, letting her mom’s comments pass without much reaction, but he had to be bothered by it. Right?
Jesse backed out of her mom’s driveway and drove toward his condo. “What’s going on in that pretty head of yours?”
“I can’t believe she said that to you.”
“Your mom. And David, for that matter. Want to see you happy.”
Cassie blew out a breath. “And that requires me to have children?”
“In their view? Yes.”
She groaned. “I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be. The vision of you pregnant with my child doesn’t scare me.”
Her breath caught in her throat. “What?”
Jesse chuckled. “Maybe I’ll find us a homestead and keep you barefoot and pregnant.”
“You would not.”
That only made him laugh harder. “No. Probably not. I don’t really see myself as a homesteading type of guy.”
“But the barefoot and pregnant part?”
“I’d let you wear shoes. No need to be barefoot. You might catch a cold.” The amusement in his voice was evident. He was having fun with this.
Cassie rolled her eyes. “Very funny.”
“I thought so.”
Silence filled the car for a few moments. “I’m still sorry. Mom tends to be very focused when she wants something.”
He nodded. “She’s worried about you. I’m okay with that.”
“You’d think I was still a teenager.”
“I think that’s normal behavior for parents. The last time I spent the night at my parents’, my mom brought me breakfast in bed.”
“My dad did that the last time I visited him. It was nice.”
Jesse smiled. “See.” He took the ramp off the highway. “Don’t stress so much about your mom. What she says has no bearing on my feelings toward you. Or what I plan to do to you once we’re inside my condo.”
The shift in topic took her a moment, but once she registered what he’d said, her body began to warm. All his teasing about keeping her pregnant, having to listen to her mom grill her about Jesse, and even finding the makeshift bed on the sixth floor fell by the wayside with images of him doing all sorts of wicked things to her body.
His fingers caressed the soft skin on the inside of her wrist as they took the elevator up to his condo. It was crazy. She shouldn’t be this turned on from such a simple touch, but she was. He could play her body like a well-tuned instrument without even trying. She could already feel herself getting wet.
