Page 73 of Entangled in Them

Holding myself back and biding my time were not normally things I was good at, but for once I knew there were more important things at stake than my own stupid impulses. I hadn’t recognized the guy who’d grabbed her. Even though I was at a distance, I didn’t think he was one of the Capellos’ men. I needed to know who they were and where they were taking her. If I revealed myself, I’d lose any element of surprise.

With Rue in the back of the car, the door slammed shut, and the vehicle pulled away from the curb.

I yanked my phone out from the inside pocket of my jacket and swiped the screen to call Kodee. They needed to know where she was.

“Some son-of-a-bitch has her,” I said, without waiting for Kodee to speak. “Use the location tracker on my phone. I’m following the car.”

“Shit. I’ll get Ryan to pick me up. Be careful.”

I was on the move before I’d even hung up. I was pretty sure these men didn’t have anything to do with the Capello brothers, which meant they must be connected to the same people the Capellos had been hiding Rue from. She’d never told us the reason behind the Capellos hiding her out with us, but I had the feeling we were going to find out—assuming we lived long enough.

Chapter Thirty-three

Rue

––––––––

I WAS AN IDIOT TO THINK I could walk back to the Capello brothers and hand myself over without there being any repercussions. Now I was sitting in the back of a car with Joe Nettie’s goon beside me.

Joe Nettie was the Capello brothers’ main rival here in New York. He was also awaiting trial for the murder of another New York gangster, Cisco King.

A murder I had witnessed.

“We missed you, Rue,” the man beside me said. “I knew we’d see you again soon enough.”

A second man was driving, and a third was in the passenger seat. I recognized them all from the time I’d spent as Joe Nettie’s plaything before everything had fallen apart.

His hand slid onto my thigh, and I shoved it away.

“Playing hard to get, huh?” he sneered. “That’s not like you.”

“Don’t make out like you’ve picked me up to fuck me, Troy,” I spat. “I know you’re going to kill me.”

“Maybe I want to do both. And since when did you get so feisty? Where’s my compliant, sweet little slut gone?”

“I’ve realized a few things while I’ve been away.”
