Chapter Fourteen

I PULLED THE MOTORCYCLE up in front of the restaurant that was the cover for the Capello brothers’ business—their real business. People trafficking, drug running, illegal gun sales.

Pizza and pasta. Seemed like a total cliché to me, but I guessed it was what worked for them. They had enough of the local cops on their payroll to get them to turn a blind eye to anyone who looked like they had no business going to a restaurant.

I was fully aware the brothers weren’t going to be happy to see me. They didn’t like to be challenged on anything, and they’d told me Rue was my payment for the work I’d done, and they wouldn’t appreciate me trying to hand her back again. But that hadn’t been our agreement when it had come to payment. It had been fifty grand for three passports, and as much as I thought Rue was hot, and would happily have a spent a week or however long we had her for fucking her, it wasn’t fifty grand.

That money had already been allocated for something. I didn’t want to get into it with the guys, but it was important. This wasn’t just about the money, though. Ryan and Kodee didn’t want Rue in the apartment. She was an intrusion we’d never asked for.

I wanted to pretend like my cock wasn’t involved in my being here, but as fuckable as Rue was, I had no intention of choosing her over Kodee and Ryan. Nothing would ever make me do that. If I needed to figure this out for them, then I would.

One of Frankie Capello’s men spotted me before I’d even made it through the door. His big body blocked the way, and he folded his arms across his chest as though to display the size of his biceps. That didn’t intimidate me. I had a decent set myself.

“What are you doing here?” he demanded.

The restaurant was empty. It was too early to have started the lunch service, and I guessed they didn’t bother opening for breakfast.

“I need to see the bothers.”

“They’re not here.”

I cocked an eyebrow. “Neither of them?” I didn’t believe him.

A muscle beside his eye flickered. So, one of them was here, at least.

“Who’s in?” I continued. “Frankie or Manuel?”

He pursed his lips and then answered. “Frankie’s in. What do you want with him?”

“Tell him it’s about the girl.”

His eyes narrowed. “What did you do to her?”

“Nothing, yet. Just tell him I need to speak with him.”

“Fine.” He looked me over one more time and huffed air out through his nostrils like a bull. “Wait there.”

I flashed him a wide smile, doing my best to hide any kind of nerves that might have been flitting away in the background, and he rewarded me with a scowl. Then he turned his back on me and left me standing there while he went to see if I’d be received.

After a couple of minutes, he appeared from the back. He had another one of the Capellos’ men with him. Perhaps they’d figured there was safety in numbers, though I had no intention of starting a fight with anyone. I only wanted to get in and out of here as quickly as possible

He jerked his chin toward me. “You’re in luck. He’ll see you.”

A part of me had been hoping he’d have said he was too busy, but I guessed luck wasn’t on my side today.

Frankie Capello was sitting in the back room. He was on his cellphone and lifted his hand to tell me to wait. I paused in the open doorway, conscious of his men at my back. I wasn’t someone who liked to feel vulnerable, but I was more than aware what these men were capable of. They’d kill me, if they needed to, and here I was, trying to get something out of them.

Finally, Frankie put down the phone and moved his attention to me. “I wasn’t expecting to see you so soon.”

“I need to talk to you about the girl.”

Frankie’s dark eyes narrowed. “Why? What’s she done?”
