“Nothing.” I shook my head. “It’s just that we don’t want her there—at our apartment, I mean. That’s where we work from, and we don’t need someone else nosing around in our business.”

He shrugged. “Lock her in a room, or even a bathroom. She won’t get in your way then.”

“We use all our rooms.”

“So, compromise for a few days.” His irritation was clear in his tone.

“A few days? Is that all it’s going to be.”

He held up both hands. “Few days, few weeks. I don’t know yet. What are you complaining about, anyway? You should be happy having her around so you can get your dick wet whenever you want.”

I tried again. “It wasn’t what we agreed on. I need that fifty grand.”

“Yeah, and you still may get it, if you can figure out how to stay out of my way until I say it’s time.”

I gritted my teeth. I really did need that money.

“So, you think it might be a few weeks, at the most, and then she’ll be gone.”

He looked back down to his desk, picked up a pen. I got the impression I was boring him. “Sounds about right.”

“And then I’ll get my money?”

“If you manage not to do anything to piss me off between now and then, and by pissing me off, I am talking about nothing happening to the girl, either.”

“I think I can manage that.”

“Glad to hear it.”

I knew I shouldn’t ask, but I couldn’t stop myself. “And what happens to the girl once you get her back?”

He lifted his dark eyes to me and cocked an eyebrow. “I don’t think you really need to know that.”

“Nah, I guess not.”

My guts twisted uneasily. When it was time for Rue to leave us, would we be handing her over to her death? I wanted to tell myself it wasn’t our business, and she had nothing to do with us, but the memory of her wide, innocent blue eyes and her incredibly sexy mouth flashed into my head. I didn’t know anything about the girl and had no connection with her, except for the obvious physical attraction, yet my heart ached at the idea of her beaten and broken. Would we be responsible in some way if we allowed this to happen? But what could we do? We were just a small gang of forgers, that was all. Though we knew how to handle ourselves, we were nothing compared to the likes of the Capello brothers. If we went against them, we’d end up dead as well. Besides, there was no way either Kodee, and especially not Ryan, would put themselves at risk for her. They didn’t even want her at the apartment, never mind lay their lives on the line on her behalf. You didn’t go up against men like the Capellos and walk away from it unscathed. That was the exact reason Kodee had warned me to stay away from them. Shame I’d never listened.

I turned to leave but paused at the sound of his voice calling after me. “Oh, and Dillon?”

“Aye?”

“Make sure no one follows you back to your apartment.”

I didn’t like the sound of that. Follow me back to the apartment? Who would be following me? It certainly wasn’t going to be Frankie’s men, or he’d just tell them to stand down. I had the horrible feeling Frankie was worried about the same people we were hiding Rue from.

I gave him a nod. “Sure.”
