When everything is well in hand, I leave the bridge and proceed to the small medical center. My human is in the medical bed. She’s unconscious, which is good that she wasn’t awake for that small scrimmage. I wish I had sent her with Ash. She’d be back on Alliance Force getting the treatment she needs now.
I look at her overall health on the medical computer. It is estimated she has one hundred and twenty hours of life if she doesn’t receive medical treatment.
I message the medical center on the base asking for assistance. Because I’m partially telepathic, I have basic medical training, but not enough to stop an Octopod wound on a human woman. I’ve never had a woman as a patient, and I’m worried I’d do more harm than good.
Twenty minutes after I sent my message, I receive an RVM from a junior doctor.
“The goddesses are still with you, Sem.”
“May they continue to shine their light,” I reply, looking at the medical screen.
“I’ve reviewed the human woman’s wounds and what you have available on the Des. Unfortunately, you don’t have the equipment to heal her fully, but you can prolong her life by stopping the poison from eating her from the inside out.”
“Please instruct me. I’m ready now.”
The junior doctor walks me through the procedure. My hands shake when I run a laser into her leg and remove as much venom as possible.
“This kind of poison can illude the computer, which is why you must do the final cleaning with your own eyes.”
“Is it organic?”
“It’s a hybrid. You’re doing well. Her life signs are stable.”
After an hour, I say, “I think I have eradicated all the poison.”
“If there’s any residue left, it’ll take it awhile to multiply, and by then, you’ll be back here before it’s life-threatening again.”
“One last thing.”
“Yes.”
“You must enter her mind and convince her body not to die. It’ll help with the healing.”
I hold eye contact with the junior doctor through the screen. When I find my voice, I tell him, “I don’t know how to do that.”
The junior doctor seems surprised. “Your record says you are telepathic and have had training.”
“I’ve had training. But I’ve never done much with my telepathy.”
“If you don’t do this, you risk her body taking too long to realize it’s not dying, and her chances of survival go down significantly. You must remember your training.”
I take a deep breath. “Can you remind me how to accomplish this?”
The junior doctor doesn’t hesitate, “Take her hands in yours. Find her mental baseline. She’s been unconscious for a while, so that it will take a few minutes, maybe even longer. Be patient. Don’t rush in. Once you are in sync with her, find common ground. She was conscious when you rescued the humans?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Then, remind her of who you are and what you are doing. You may have to repeat this a few times. If you find she is resisting, show her memories from your past that will make her open up to you.”
“Like what?” I ask. I have no idea what would make a human woman feel comfortable. Their culture is so contrary to Alliance.
“With humans, they tend to open up to family gatherings,” the junior doctor suggests.
“My family memories are haunted,” I say honestly.
“Try friendship, any shared moments of good emotional connections. You’ll automatically transfer those pure thoughts.”
“Okay. How long will this take in total? Is there a risk I can’t get out?”
