I pick up my phone and open my messenger app.
Cameron: Monica
I wait a moment.
Cameron: Monica
I give her ten more seconds.
Cameron: Monica
I count to twenty in my head, but before I can type again, she responds.
Monica: WTF?
I smile. There’s my girl.
Cameron: Hi
I laugh as I imagine her irritated expression.
Monica: Why are you bothering me?
My smile drops.
Cameron: You said we’d talk.
Monica: Yeah, but not over text.
Perfect. My smile returns.
Cameron: I’ll come by later tonight. 7?
Ellipses appear, then disappear, then reappear.
Monica: Let’s meet at Java Joe’s.
I frown. I know what she’s doing, keeping things impersonal and away from Hayley. It shouldn’t hurt, but it does.
Cameron: Won’t it be closed by 7?
There’s a pause.
Monica: Oh, right
Before she can come up with an alternative, I write back.
Cameron: Let’s just meet at my place.
A risky suggestion. I doubt she’ll be comfortable meeting at my place, but I’m already tired of the where-should-we-meet game. I want to see her. We need to talk.
Monica: Fine. Send me your address.
Chapter 26
Monica
I can’t believe I agreed to come here.
