Page 33 of Not That Into You

Mom: Nica

I huff out a breath. “This is ridiculous. What was today’s word?”

He inhales sharply. “I can’t tell you that. That would be cheating.”

“Yes, but it’s for my mom. She’s asking for help.”

“I can give her a hint.”

Mom: Nica

“Can you please just give me the word?”

“It’ll cost you.”

I huff out a breath. “Never mind.”

He laughs. “The word is ‘tacit.’”

“Tacit?”

“Yes.”

I type out “tacit” while mumbling, “No wonder. I doubt she knows that word.”

“Your mom doesn’t know the word ‘tacit?”

My brow furrows. “I’m not sure I even know what it means. Or if I’m spelling it correctly. Besides, English is her third language.”

“Really?”

I glance over at Cameron. “Yes. Most Filipinos speak three or more languages. Usually, a regional language and then Filipino and English.” A thought occurs to me. “Your family knows I’m part Filipino, right?”

“Um . . . I don’t think so.”

I stare at him. “You didn’t tell them?”

“No. I didn’t think it was relevant.”

“You didn’t think it was relevant?” I snort out a breath. “Because your family’s comfortable with you dating an Asian American?”

“Uh . . .”

I groan.

This weekend is going to be so much fun.

Chapter 10

Cameron

We pull into the circular driveway, and I park in front of my parents’ house.

Neither of us moves.

I stare at the house, my body heavy as I process I’ve dragged Monica to the Hamptons as my girlfriend. I’m paying her a lot of money, but now I’m wondering if it’s enough.

If we survive the weekend, maybe I’ll give her a bonus.
