When I notice the scowl on Hayley’s face, I try to clear my expression. “And?”
“And she’s leaving.”
What remains of my smile disappears. “Only for a few weeks.”
“Or possibly months.”
I frown. “She’s coming back.”
“Even still, you have feelings for her.”
I press my lips together, unwilling to lie or talk about my feelings for Monica, which have only grown stronger the more time we’ve spent together. I know I should keep some distance, maintain some walls, but I haven’t. Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment, but having her come over after work—making dinner together and just talking—has quickly become my favorite part of the day.
I know I’m screwed. I’ve gotten used to sharing a bed with her, waking up to her curled in a ball at my side. And I’ve talked to her about my upcoming interview, bounced ideas off her, and gotten her input on my presentation. She’s done a lot of marketing and branding work, and I value her opinion and have come to rely on her feedback.
And she has to go home to Ohio for a while and focus on her family.
I huff out a breath. “What’s your point, Hayley?”
“Cameron...” She frowns. “I’m worried about you.”
“About me?”
“Yes. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
My brow furrows. “You think Monica’s going to hurt me?”
“Not on purpose. But I know her. And I know you.” She presses her lips together. “Monica is guarded. She keeps people at a distance, and she’s adamant your relationship is casual.”
Clenching my jaw, I ignore the ping of disappointment. “And?”
“And you don’t do casual, Cameron.”
I lean back and spread my hands. “I’m the master of casual, Hayley.”
“Not in relationships.”
I force a chuckle. “On the contrary. My reputation precedes me.”
“Cut the crap, Cameron. I’m your best friend. You either serially date women or are in a serious relationship. There’s no middle ground with you.”
I open my mouth to protest but think better of it. She’s right. It’s been over a year since I broke things off with my last girlfriend, and that relationship lasted two years. Since then, I’ve gone on a number of first dates but haven’t had time for more. I’ve been too busy focusing on work.
But that doesn’t mean I can’t handle a casual relationship. At least for a little while.
I cross my arms. “Monica needs to take care of her family right now. I respect that.”
“So do I. But I also know you have feelings for her.” She frowns. “I’m just worried.”
Blowing out a breath, I look at the ceiling before looking back at Hayley. “I know what I’m doing.” Sort of. “I’m fine.”
“I haven’t seen you like this around any other woman. You’re serious about her.”
I run a hand through my hair. “Look, Hayley, I appreciate your concern, and I’ll admit I care for Monica, but I know the score.” I grimace. “I’ll be careful.”
Hayley sighs. “I knew you’d say that, but I had to try. I just wish...” She frowns while shaking her head. “Anyway.”
“What?”
