I stare at his face, and it occurs to me Cameron’s always smiling or on the verge of smiling.
Except right now.
Right now, there’s no trace of humor in his expression. Instead, he looks as if he sat on a thumbtack and is doing his best to soldier through the irritation.
I suck in a breath. “You’re fucking with me, right?”
“No.”
I blink a few times to make sure I’m awake and not caught up in some bizarre dream. Or nightmare. “Why does your mother think we’re dating?”
He shrugs. “Someone saw us together at Hayley’s party.”
“And?”
A smile spreads across his face. “The person obviously saw you gazing at me longingly all night long.”
“What? Please. If I was looking at you, it was with horror and disdain.”
“Regardless,” he says, wiggling his brows, “you were looking.”
“Your ego has its own time zone. It’s hard to miss.”
His smile broadens, making his dimples appear. Goddammit.
“Anyway,” I say while narrowing my eyes, “whether or not I was looking at you—which I wasn’t?—”
“You were.”
“I wasn’t. That still doesn’t explain why someone thought we were together.”
His smile falls with a sigh as he runs a hand through his hair. “I guess they saw us arguing.”
“We’re always arguing. That doesn’t explain anything.”
“Apparently, they thought we were having a lovers’ quarrel.”
I look at him in disbelief. “I dumped my drink on you.”
“I know.”
“Somebody has a fucked-up sense of love if they think dousing you with alcohol is a sign of undying affection.”
He shrugs.
I sigh inwardly. I really shouldn’t have dumped my drink on him, no matter how infuriating he was. I am, in fact, an adult who can use her words. Which means I owe him an overdue apology.
Awesome.
I take a deep breath. “Speaking of which, I’m sorry I did that.”
His eyes widen. “Oh, well, I provoked you.”
“Yes, you did.” He smirks. Did he really think I’d disagree? “Though I often want to cause you bodily harm, I’m usually able to restrain myself. I lost my cool that night.”
His mouth twitches. “Are you saying I’m in mortal danger whenever I’m in your presence?”
“I would’ve thought that was obvious. But I’ll be better at exercising restraint in the future.”
