Her answer spoke volumes without saying a word. “Thank you. Is this the first meal you’ve eaten today?”

“What constitutes a meal, Sir?”

“Oh. Breaking out titles, sweetheart? I must be correct, then. You know what a meal is. Protein, veggies, carbs, fats. And you should have snacks in between. Do I need to draw you a nutrition chart?”

“I was busy today.”

“That’s not a good excuse. It’s important to fuel your body. You know this. We both have demanding jobs, which makes taking care of ourselves and eating properly even more important.”

“Running around Falcon Creek and Cheyenne talking about drugs is hardly demanding.”

“We are both on the move all day. Just because you’re not lifting patients doesn’t mean you're not taxing your body. Don’t argue with Daddy.”

My answer seemed to light a fire under her ass instead of calming her down. Her eyes flashed with irritation. “I was not arguing! But I will now. Your job is incredibly important, and I literally do nothing that helps anybody. I’m a pill pusher. No one would give a fuck if I never showed up to work again.”

“You sounded dismissive of your career when it’s just as important as any other job. Go stand in the corner nearest to the counter. I’ll tell you when you can get out.”

Karsyn pursed her lips and narrowed her eyes. Finally, she pushed her chair out and stood up. She looked like she was about to tell me off or throw a tantrum, but then she marched to the corner and turned to face the wall. I was proud of her for listening, but I wanted to know why she was upset. After five minutes, I stood up from my chair and reached the corner. Rubbing her back, I moved to her shoulders and pressed a kiss to her neck. “Come on, babygirl. Let’s finish dinner and you can tell me what’s bothering you so much.”

She sighed but followed me back to the table. “I’m sorry, Daddy. I’ve been feeling extremely down lately regarding my job. It’s very stressful mentally because I’m starting to realize that I don’t want to do it anymore.”

“What else do you want to do?”

She stared into her wine glass for a few seconds before drinking the rest of it. “That’s a great question. I graduated from college with a business degree. I have life experience in retail and corporate environments. I enjoy being near healthcare without necessarily being immersed in it.”

“I understand. Why don’t you pick two careers to research this week? They don’t have to be practical. Just pick two random careers and see what appeals to you about them and what doesn’t. Let me know by next weekend what they were.”

“What the hell is the point? You’re saying I can pick like… astronaut and investigate what it would take to choose it as my job?”

“Yes, babygirl. If you’re not happy in your current role and you don’t know where your passion lies, then use it as a tool to explore. I’m not guiding you only in the bedroom.”

I watched her mull over my response. Finally, the frustration that had been knitting her eyebrows together relaxed, and so did I. I enjoyed helping my partners become the best version of themselves, whether personally or professionally. I rubbed my hand along my chin, waiting for her to say something.

“You’re right, August. I shouldn’t have been so skeptical. I feel like you’ve presented yourself as someone who just struts around like you’ve had a silver spoon in your mouth growing up, but there’s so much more to you.”

“Are you saying I look like a spoiled brat?” I watched her squirm against the chair. Finally, she looked up at me and shook her head. “No, not really. But I did judge you. I’m sorry for doing it. It wasn’t fair and I was crushing on you before we met at the club.”

That surprised me. Spence had pointed her out more than a few times, telling me how Karsyn blushed whenever we were around. I’d mistakenly believed Karsyn wasn’t interested. Though I hadn’t approached either, except to offer the occasional passing, casual greeting. Leaning forward I took her hand in mine. “Why didn’t you say something?”

“We were working. I didn’t know your relationship status. Plus, as confident as I am selling my wares to doctors and medical professionals, I was desperately longing for…”

“What, Karsyn? What were you longing for?”

“A deeper connection. A beautiful friendship that leads to more. A dominant partner.” She chewed on her bottom lip.

“You were afraid to be vulnerable again. I can relate. Hell, I was afraid to be vulnerable at all.”

“Something about Logan allows him to pull out another side of you. At least it seems like it.”

“I trust him. I trust Logan so very much. He uncovers all of these little bits and pieces of myself that I refuse to show anyone. Some of them I still refuse to admit to myself. Logan finds them, polishes off the grit and the grime, and hangs them up proudly, displaying them for the whole world to see.” I sighed.

“I know you’ve never had a dominant partner but there’s more to it. Isn’t there?” Karsyn walked around the table and sat on my thigh.

I shifted her into a more comfortable position and cupped her cheek. “Yeah, there is. Until Logan, I refused to tell anyone how much I desired to be in a relationship with another man. It’s so stupid looking back on it and how long I suffered needlessly instead of just being myself.”

“I hate that you hid that part of you away from everyone, but I think Logan was always meant to be yours. That he was supposed to do everything he’s doing for you right now.”

“Maybe.” I nuzzled her nose until she giggled. “Do you have a Little side, babygirl?”
