Hawk managed to compose himself long enough to explain.
The girls looked at me in sympathy.
"I'm sorry that happened," Bec said. "It's not okay to do that to a man or a woman."
I shrugged. I could live with it. Stuff like that happened often enough. What worried me was that Rubie would hear about this sooner or later and probably get the wrong end of the stick, like Grace assumed.
If I thought she was pissed off at me now— There was still room for things to get worse.
I had to see her, to explain things before word of this got out.
"Oh God," Bec said.
I looked at her questioningly. Followed her gaze.
Harvey Danbury stood with his phone in his hand. He looked from the screen to me and smiled.
"Fuck," I said under my breath. "Please tell me that doesn't mean what I think it does."
"Judging by the look on his face, it does," Bec said.
"Do you want us to tackle his ass and grab the phone?" Bam asked.
I shook my head. "That would only make things worse." If the situation could possibly get any worse. I really shouldn't think that. The universe might not be done fucking with me.
Could I hide in the corner for the next decade or two?
"Hey, Ollie," Bam said, as though building up for a joke. "I know a good publicist if Carson Thomas thinks your reputation needs to be rebuilt." He gave Grace a sly smile.
I shook my head. I doubted Carson Thomas would waste money on me if he thought I was trying to screw over his daughter.
He'd probably make sure the door hit me on the way out.
CHAPTER 14
RUBIE
"This just gets better and better," I muttered to myself.
"Are you okay?" Carrie was Dad's dog walker. She had Max and Pookie, Dad's miniature poodles, on a leash. The pair were excited, tugging as though they could actually pull her out the door. They were cute, if ‘pain in the neck’ was what you're into.
I don't know why Dad bought them, he had no time for them anyway.
As always, Carrie smiled at them and leaned down to pat them behind the ears. At least they got plenty of love from her.
"Um. Yeah. I'm fine," I lied. The photo of Ollie with his hand down some woman's dress was all over the Internet.
The only saving grace was that no one had photographed us together. Otherwise I'd have journalists knocking down the door.
"If you're sure." The dogs tugged Carrie harder
I waved her away. "If those two don't get a walk soon, they're going to go nuts." I smiled at the silly dogs. They looked like a pair of lambs with collars on their necks.
"Yes, they are." Carrie looked uncertain, but she let the dogs pull her out the door.
I slumped into a chair the moment it closed behind her. I turned on my phone and looked at the photo again. There it was, clear for everyone to see. Ollie's hand down the front of her dress, gripping her breast. I couldn't see all of him, but his eyes were wide. Exactly what I'd expect for someone fondling a woman in public.
Asshole.
