On the drive over, Oliver could sense his brother’s anxiety growing with each unanswered phone call.
And Oliver probably made hundreds.
“She was supposed to come here this morning.” Seth pounded his fist on the counter. “She had an escort of four police officers!”
Despite the situation and his concern for Clary, Oliver was glad to see this side of his brother—to see him fighting for something beyond survival.
To see him find his voice again.
Oliver took Seth’s phone out of his pocket when it buzzed.
“If you’re hiding the fact that she’s here—”
“Seth.” Oliver handed his brother the phone. “Detective Murphy.” He gave the desk clerk an apologetic smile while Seth answered the call.
“What?” Seth took off toward the elevators. “Why would they do that?”
“Sorry about that,” Oliver mumbled to the clerk, then hurried after Seth.
“She went home,” Seth said when he ended the call. “Even the old man didn’t want her at the mansion on her own. I don’t know what the officers were thinking.”
“They probably just took her where she wanted to go.”
Seth shot him a glare before stepping into the elevator.
“Now you’re angry with me? I drove into Hugh’s Ferrari for you.”
Seth had gone up to Hugh and threatened to destroy the watch, along with the memory chip and recording device. Unless, of course, Hugh got out of his sight immediately.
The Eolenfeld tried to put up an argument, but Seth had said his piece and wasn’t going to add anything to it.
Oliver had to hand it to Hugh, though. His Eolenfeld entitlement was so strong he couldn’t seem to grasp the concept of people saying no to him.
So they had to activate Plan B: Oliver driving his car right into Hugh’s.
Which they assumed would draw Elton out. And with his brother’s temper, Elton and Hugh were bound to get into a fight.
Which was exactly what happened.
“I feel kind of bad for leaving Elton to deal with Hugh on his own,” Oliver said.
“Looked to me like he was having a great time.”
As Seth and Oliver were leaving, they’d seen Elton get into Oliver’s car, reverse, then drive right into the Ferrari again.
“I just hope Elton doesn’t change targets and try to ram Hugh instead.”
Seth blinked and turned to Oliver. “I didn’t think my plan through.”
Oliver waved it off. “He’ll be fine. If he did, he get out and try to save him. He’s a doctor after all.”
“You really think he would do that?”
Oliver opened his mouth, but he couldn’t make himself say yes.
“Check the doorbell camera, and text Zane,” Seth said. “He should be on his way home. Tell him to hurry.”
“Zane’s not going to be happy.”
