“I’m sure she is. But it’s not happening, Ivy. I just wanted to tell you that.”
My chest aches at the thought of him wanting someone he thinks he shouldn’t.
How can he be so accepting of Griffin and me but refuse to entertain Shelby as an option?
I need to choose my battles, and this isn’t one of them. Our hearts are still healing from the latest drama, let alone this.
I believe him, but I don’t think he realizes how happy he could make Shelby, and vice versa.
“Okay,” I say, defeated. “Why don’t you shower, and I’ll head out and get something for lunch? Do you mind if Griffin and Melody join us?”
Dad rises, stopping to look at me.
“I’m so fucking proud of you, Ivy. They’re lucky to have you. We’relucky to have you.”
I beam at him, flicking my hair over my shoulder.
“Is that a yes?”
“Tell Griffin he owes me some beers.”
I roll my eyes.
“You owe him an apology.”
“I hear you.”
I smile as Dad strides upstairs, and soon enough, I hear the shower running.
There’s also room for one more at the dinner table, but I’m unsure if she’ll come.
Only one way to find out.
Epilogue
Six Months Later: Ivy
“I love it here,” I breathe, sitting on the balcony overlooking the city.
The pretty lights line the skyline, and I stare at them, wondering what all the people beneath them are doing. It’s seven in the evening, so probably eating dinner, watching TV, or even sleeping.
Who knows?
Griffin smirks at me from across the table, easing back into his chair.
“It’s growing on me.”
“You’re such a country boy,” I tease as he chuckles.
“And you’re a city girl.”
“I like it here too,” Melody chirps from the doorway, grinning at us both. “I love being back at my school. I missed it. Plus, I get to see Grandma more.”
I open my arms to her and she trots over, snuggling against my chest as Griffin stares at me with a heated expression.
“What?” I mouth at him, but I already know what it is.
He loves me with his daughter so much that he wants me to adopt Melody. I want to, I really do, but I’ve told him to give it six more months so she can adjust to her new life. I’m positive Melody has additional needs, and her routine is crucial.
