I sigh because I know he is right. My life is about to turn on its axis with this newfound wealth, and my new status in the technology world.
My days are already busy with developing future apps and it’s second-nature to me and what I want to do. I don’t want tospend my days doing admin or anything else that would take me from what I love.
“Maybe it’s time for you to slow down, have some fun. Why don’t you ask the girl out before everyone knows who you are,” Finn says.
I smile at that. Because I’m not the type of man women want. And I don’t help myself because I spend my days and most of the night in my office at home. My life is nothing but work.
But that’s nothing new. I’ve been the same since college. I’ve thrown myself into what I love and it’s a shame. Apart from my best friend Taylor, girls and I never seem to mix well—too nerdy and shy—and I’m not into men.
Once upon a time, I thought Taylor and I would live a happily ever after together. That was until her baby’s daddy came back on the scene and that destroyed that idea. We’re still best friends, and I love her daughter like she’s mine. And now I have to resign myself to a life of being by myself for a while longer, and concentrate on expanding my company.
“You’ll have women falling at your feet once you make the billionaire bachelor list,” Finn says. It’s as though he is aware of my thoughts.
“Unfortunately, they’ll not want me. And I only want one girl, but…” I resign myself to what this means and knowing the money means I’ll never find the ‘one’ now. From what I understand, the formalities of contracts are set to be concluded sometime this week.
Finn laughs down the phone. “Get her then. Before you have supermodels throwing themselves at you.”
“Yeah,” I say, like that’s ever going to happen. Not that I want it to.
Standing up, I leisurely walk towards the window and take a quick look down at the bustling street below and the coffee shop. Her favorite place is nearby, and she never misses a day there. “I’ll let you go, and thanks for everything.”
“And get yourself out and celebrate, because soon your name will be all over the news. You won’t be able to do anything.”
After hanging up the phone, I push my wallet into my pocket, leave the office and take the elevator.
It’s time to celebrate with a steaming cup of coffee, a touch of stalking while I browse at luxurious penthouses for sale in the city. Maybe I’ll even go to a bar later.
Oh, and find a permanent member of staff.
My lack of funds stopped me from hiring staff when I was a start-up company, but I’m lucky with Finn because he helped me with all the paperwork behind getting the company an offer.
It works well for the two of us.
But I suppose he did it for the money. Finn is known for his negotiating skills, but I’d be good at it too if I knew I was securing ten percent of what I agreed. It’s likely that he was angry when I declined the previous offer, which is understandable. It was an awful lot of money to give up. But I knew he could do better. I knew the app was worth more, and he agreed in the end. That was surprising, and when he vowed to find me another outstanding deal, I trusted him.
It’s going to get too big for you.
Stepping into the busy street, I am immediately surrounded by the hustle and bustle of people rushing by. I shiver slightly as I zip up my jacket, feeling the sting of the cold air on my cheeks.
I glance around, feeling daunted by the gravity of what this means, going from a barely scraping it together nerd to a—billionaire nerd. And I should be worried, but nobody knows yet and as I walk down the street, I smile.
I’m an unknown but finally successful, and no longer a struggling-to-make-a-living entrepreneur.
It feels good.
I pause and cast a glance at my two beloved coffee shops, wondering where to go. I remove my black-rimmed glasses and give my tired eyes a gentle rub. In hindsight, I should have chosen to stay home and catch up on the sleepless nights that this deal had stolen from me.
Maybe a steaming cup of coffee will be enough to wake me up.
And hopefully, she’ll turn up.
The girl I can’t help but gaze at from my window. The girl who exudes an aura of mystery.
I push my glasses up my nose, feeling the slight pressure as they settle into place. That’s when I see her, like an angel floating from the sky. She wasn’t there before I rubbed my face, but now she stands directly in front of me with the most beautiful smile, and she’s holding out her hand to me.
And my heart races with panic.
I swallow as my eyes roam over her curvy body, from her off-white blouse to the dark blue pencil skirt she wears that looks like it’s seen better days. I continue looking, seeing a pair of navy stilettos at the end of her gorgeous legs.
