“Gabby,” I whisper as she stands at the door, with her suitcase propping it open.

“I have to go,” she says.

“No!”

She spins around to face me, tears lace her eyes, breaking my heart. “You lied to me, and I’ve waited for three days for you to tell me the truth, and you still haven’t, so I’m going home.”

“No,” I yell.

“Yes.” Her voice barely audible.

“I’m still the same man you’ve known all these weeks.”

Her eyes stare into mine as she shakes her head. “And who is that?”

I rush to her and grab the handle as she pushes the suitcase out of the door. I shake my head. “Stay,” I beg as I catch her arm.

“Let me go.” Her body turns as she twists out of my hold. “I need some space. I need to get away.”

“No, we need to talk,” I yell. “You’re mine, Gabby. You know you are.”

Her lips curve into a beautiful smile, but when her words come out, they’re shaky. “I always felt yours, but now I don’t know who that person is at all. I don’t know who you are.”

“Yes, you do.” My voice is raising, but the fury is at me not her. “I’m the man who loves you. Let me prove it to you.”

She wipes at the tears that run down her face, and my heart breaks at the sadness I’ve caused.

“I need to go,” she sobs. “I need to figure out what I want.”

I stare into her eyes, desperately wanting to pull her into my arms, scared she’s leaving and this is the end.

“Gabby, I... I promise you I never meant to hurt you.”

She nods. I’m not sure if she really knows it, but she says nothing back.

She glances at her arm where my hand is wrapped around it. She sighs, looks down at the suitcase, and I already feel the gulf between us growing.

“Please,” I whisper. My cheeks feel hot from the tears that are falling.

Her eyes are full of sorrow, her expression torn, but she turns and walks away from me, heading straight for the elevator.

I watch the elevator doors shut and quietly close the door to my apartment and head to my bedroom.

The thought of losing her turns my stomach but what did I expect.

I throw myself on my bed, curl up in a ball. I miss her already. I don’t know how I’ll cope if this is forever.

Hopefully, it’s only for the space she needs.

Whatever it is, I’m dying from an ache in my chest.

Is this what they mean by being heartbroken?
