She was going to be all of mine.

Until it all went wrong.

I blow out a deep breath as I remember that night.

It was so perfect, so romantic as she laid in my arms—until it wasn’t…

My phone chimes with an incoming message from my father, taking me away from my thoughts.

Dad: Looking forward to showing you our amazing new office overlooking the River Thames.

Me: Nice. But you know I haven’t agreed to work for you yet.

It’s so typical of my father to make decisions without asking, but I’m not going to be railroaded until I’m ready.

I was thinking of taking some time off and try to find out where Ava moved to. Because I’ve checked every law office in her hometown, and also every law office in Manchester, because that’s where I know she was completing her Legal Practice Course, but I never found her in either place.

I’m starting to wonder if she qualified.

Dad: Your mother and I are happy that you decided to come home. I’ll be happier whenI know I’ll be handing my company over to you.

Me: Happy to be coming home too.

I quickly reply.

I am ready to go home, I’m over living overseas. I’ve done it since I gained my legal qualifications, but now it’s time to go home and get on with my life and if I can’t find Ava after a few months, I’m going to give up looking for her. I just hope when that time comes, I can get over her once and for all.

My phone chimes again, just as the airline opens the doors.

Dad: We’re getting really busy at work. I’ll be glad to hand over to you some of my clients and semi-retire with your mother. Looking forward to seeing you, son.

Me: Thanks, see you at Heathrow Airport. We’re boarding now.

“We are now boarding all first-class passengers to London Heathrow. Please have your tickets and passports ready for checking before boarding,” a lady’s voice says over the air.

I pat my chest, checking for my ticket and passport, which I’d secured in my inside jacket pocket, and rise from my seat. Just as my phone chimes again.

Harrison: I’ve been desperately trying to do something for you before you leave and I did it. I found her!

Me: Who?

I place my cell in my pocket before I hand my ticket and passport over to the steward for checking before following his directions down the walkway and into the first-class cabin.

My phone chimes again as I push my luggage into the overhead compartment and once I take my seat, I pull my phone out of pocket and check the message.

Harrison: Your ex-girlfriend, Ava. I’m gonna send you something.

I wait for a message.

One minute.

Two.

My stomach twists as I wait for the message to come through.

Me: Did you send it?

My phone vibrates in my hand.
