I breathe out raggedly and lean forward. I press a kiss to her back and push myself upward.

“Let me get you cleaned up,” I grunt as I slide off the bed.

However, as soon as my feet hit the floor, the chime of the front door rings.

What the hell? Who’s here?

Melody

“Get dressed,” Aiden instructs me, rushing to put on his own clothes. He grabs a towel and quickly wipes down the sexy mess we made and then tosses it into the hamper. “I guess Connor came home early.”

I nod and push myself up to a sitting position. “Well, I guess we can just share dinner together, tonight?”

He nods. “That’s fine. I don’t mind. We can say we were working on something. I don’t know if he’ll buy it entirely, but it’ll be fine.” His voice is rushed as he smooths out his hair.

I dress quickly, trotting to follow him down the hallway and toward the main staircase. However, as soon as we reach the grand staircase in the entryway, Aidenfreezes.

“What are you doing here?” he demands, thundering down the staircase. His footsteps echo through the entire house. As I peer down, my eyes widen.

Oh my god. It’s his ex-wife.

Madeline glares at him. “I’m here to pick up Connor.”

“Why? He’s at horseback riding lessons this evening, and he’s staying late to help Katie clean out the stalls. It’s good for him.”

“Sorry, what?” she snaps, folding her arms across her petite chest.

She’s dressed in a tight black pencil skirt and frilly red blouse. She’s as beautiful as she was that day at the bar, and I feel a moment of inferiority as I realize how rumpled I probably look.

“He’s got lessons twice a week. This is one of his lesson days. I gave you the information, Madeline. I emailed you his schedule.” Aiden’s voice is sharp and unforgiving, and I raise my brows at him. He is really not a fan of this woman.

“I guess I got the days mixed up, then,” she says with an annoyed sigh. “It’s just hard to balance all of this shit. Between his schedule, work, and me trying to plan my wedding, it makes it hard to keep it all straight.”

“Yeah, so you keep saying.” Aiden’s voice doesn’t soften.

I stand frozen and silent at the top of the staircase, hoping that Madeline will leave before she notices that I’m standing there in the entryway. I mean, I don’t know if she’d even recognize me, but if she did…

“Who isthat?” Her voice cuts right into my thoughts, and I try to breathe evenly as I’m met with her cold, judgmental gaze.

I clear my throat. “I’m...”

“This is Melody,” Aiden answers for me, his voice taking an edge of anxiety. “She’s here—”

“Because you’re fucking her, obviously.” Madeline scoffs, shaking her head. “Not hard to put two and two together, Aiden. Connor is gone, so you must have a little fling going on.”

“It’s not like that,” he replies flatly.

“And what would it be like, then?” She looks back up to me again, this time her gaze narrowing. “Wait a minute, I know who you are...”

“Um,” I begin, barely able to get any words to come out of my dry mouth.

“You’re the bartender I wanted for my wedding,” she snaps. “You quit before I had a chance to ensure that you were going to be the one serving.”

“I’m sorry,” I mutter, still standing stark still on the stairs.

I don’t know what the hell I’m supposed to do right now, but I’m hoping Aiden will take care of it.
