“Your interview will be in here. Since you’re a few minutes early, would you like to grab a coffee down the hall? Maybe a pastry? They’re brought in from Happy Cow,” she adds.
“I think I’m too nervous,” I admit. “Maybe I’ll get something after…”
She smiles sweetly and pats my arm. “You’re going to do just fine. Any friend of Sofie’s is good people.”
I smile back at her. “Thank you, Helen. You’re putting my mind at ease and I’m really grateful.”
She opens the door and I walk into the room, surprised to see it’s bigger than I expected. Windows overlook a courtyard that is just as picturesque as everything else in the hospital. I wonder if Dr. Precious designed this room too.
Helen taps on the door as I sit down and I look back at her. “Let me know if you need anything. I’m sure it’ll only be a few minutes before everyone arrives.”
“Thank you.”
She closes the door and I try to get my nerves under control. My hands are clammy and I wipe them on my black pencil skirt just as the door opens.
Dr. Precious himself walks through the door and looks shocked when he sees me sitting in the room. He turns to look at the door like he’s in the wrong place and then turns back to me.
“Did you lose your way to the ER?” I ask through a gritted smile.
Which Dr. Wyatt will I get this time?
“You’re the ten o’clock interview?” His voice is like a blade over my skin, cutting and uncomfortable.
“I am.” I attempt a cheerful tone, but I feel about as doomed as his face looks.

BLINK-BLINK
WYATT
I can’t believe it when I see Marlow in the conference room.
I didn’t want to do this interview to begin with, but I got roped into it since I had a cancellation. It’s awkward seeing her after what I just overheard…and the way it’s been between us every other time doesn’t help.
Her husband sounds like a real dick.
I would’ve already looked at her differently today without hearing her on the phone because of the conversation I had with Theo, Sofie, and Grinny about her just last night.
“I’m soglad Marlow and Dakota seem to be settling in,” Grinny said.
“She’s loving it here,” Sofie said, leaning her head on Theo’s shoulder. “And nothing makes me happier. It was the last thing on my wish list, but I never thought she’d really make the move.”
“What is her story anyway?” I asked. “She’s so infuriating. I feel like she has had it out for me since day one.”
Sofie’s brow pinched at my sharp tone. “I’m surprised you don’t already know. She’s been here a few weeks and it isn’t a secret.”
I frowned. “We haven’t exactly…hit it off. I don’t know if she told you, but she hit my car a few weeks ago…maybe right around the time she got here. And it’s been downhill from there.”
Sofie’s frown deepened. “No, she didn’t say anything about that. Was she hurt? Were you?”
“Neither of us were hurt. My car is—” I waved my hand. “Bill was able to fix it last week. Stupidly expensive, but—”
Sofie sucked in a breath. “I bet that hurt for her to pay.” She shook her head. “I can’t believe she hasn’t said anything about this.”
“I didn’t…I took care of it. She gave me her number, but I haven’t…”
“Well, that’s really nice of you. What do you mean you haven’t hit it off though?” she asked.
