“Alright, what are your first thoughts?” he asked, directing the question to Tamilya.
“As I said, I knew of him. The CIA tried numerous times to turn him, so they would probably be pissed if they knew the FBI had him.”
“The letter agencies are a bunch of bitchy little whiners,” Marcus said.
“True, but we are a letter agency,” she said with a smile. “It could be as I said. He came here with a woman and someone saw him.”
“How often does that actually happen?” Del asked.
“A lot more than you’d think. We had someone who had turned an oligarch from Russia who had turned on Putin. Mainly because we caught him outside of Russia supplying illegal arms. He was seen at a resort by an FSB agent on vacation. He was dead within forty-eight hours. That is one of many. These guys are good at making money, but they are sometimes so damned arrogant it leads to their deaths.”
“Maybe that was it and the person who killed him is gone,” Del said. He sighed. “Knowing our luck…”
“Right,” Marcus said. He looked at her. “You going to do some calling around?”
She nodded as she saw TFH’s second-in-command Adam Lee walk into the main office. “There’s Adam, can you talk to him while I dig around with my contacts?”
He nodded.
“Good,” Del said. “I’m really thankful we have both of you. This is making me twitchy, and I like that I have the two of you with your particular backgrounds.”
“Does that mean we get a raise?” Marcus asked as he held the door open for her.
“I’ll give you one when I get one. Keep me updated.”
“Will do, boss," Marcus said. “Do you want this opened or closed?”
“Closed. I need to get ready for this interview today.”
“I didn’t know you were adding to the team,” she said.
“They’re talking about expanding our duties. If they do that, I need more people. We’re already strained.”
She nodded and turned as Adam walked up to them. “We’re doing the grunt work for the FBI?” he asked.
“Yeah,” Marcus answered. “I hate the idea of dealing with them, but if we have someone killing assets on our turf, then we need to stop him. We’re going to be better at it than the FBI.”
“Speaking of the FBI, I need to call around,” she said.
“Addie?” Marcus asked, his tone flat. She didn’t know what he had against her old boss in the FBI, but it started about the same time as his disdain for the organization.
“Yes. Is there a problem?”
He shook his head. “Adam and I can start making a list of people to talk to.”
“Let me grab some coffee first,” Adam said as he left to do just that.
Marcus nodded.
“Seriously, Marcus, whatisyour problem with Addie?” she asked.
“None.”
She knew he wasn’t telling her the truth, but she let it go. They didn’t need to get into any kind of fight when they had so much work ahead of them. “I’ll get to work since I know some of my contacts will be heading to bed soon.”
She headed to her office, trying her best not to growl. She was excited about the opportunity, but working with Marcus on something like this wasn’t going to be fun.
When she had first gotten hired by TFH, she didn’t know if she could be more than civil to him. Their relationship had been over before either of them could blink. It wasn’t only that he ended it. It was that he thought she would fall apart when he’d dumped her.
