“I don’t blame you.”
Although for her, home would be the last place she would want to be. Of course, Elle worked a different job. And Tamilya would always want to be in the thick of things no matter what.
“Where you off to, Lowe?” Marcus asked.
“Sorry. Thinking about how our various jobs means we look at our jobs differently. I would go insane watching this on TV.”
“Me too,” he said as he clicked the button to unlock the doors to the truck. She went to the passenger side. As she slid across the seat to sit next to him, their legs brushed. She couldn’t fight against the shiver, the need that rose up. They had too many things to worry about right now, but it was hard to ignore the attraction she had for Marcus. It was embarrassing. As he started the truck—completely oblivious to her reaction—Graeme slipped in beside her. He was on the phone.
“I didn’t bloody tell you before because I didn’t have time.”
“Methinks the wife wasn’t happy with him taking the copter ride,” he said with a chuckle.
“I did not take my life into my hands. I was on board with a ton of bloody brass, so they weren’t going to crash.”
A laugh escaped before she could stop it. Graeme gave her a look of disgust. She covered her mouth.
“I know accidents happen. You know you get like this…”
He glanced at them.
“Never mind. I promise not to take any more trips on a helicopter.”
He listened and smiled. “I love you too, Eleanora.”
Then he hung up. Marcus pulled out onto the side street. One of the great things about being in an official vehicle is that they could bypass any and all roadblocks.
“So, I take it the good doctor isn’t happy with you?” Marcus asked.
Graeme grumbled under his breath.
“What was that, man? I didn’t understand it.”
Tamilya chuckled, which earned her another glare from the surly Scot. “Not that it’s any of your business but no she isn’t. In fact, she read me the riot act. Said I wasn’t being a responsible father.”
As Marcus caught Graeme up to speed with the situation, Tamilya thought about the part of the conversation they could hear. Elle was a new mom, but there was something else there. Something adding to the stress.
“I didn’t know today was a regular day off for Elle,” she said when it had grown quiet.
“She’s a little under the weather.”
But he was looking out the window trying to avoid eye contact. The two had married not long ago while Elle was still pregnant. She hadn’t been at the wedding because she barely knew the group then. What she did know was that Elle wanted more babies and they were working on borrowed time. Elle was older than Graeme.
“So, how far along is she?” Tamilya asked.
“They just had a baby,” Marcus said.
But Graeme was already cussing. “Bloody hell, she’s going to kill me. Doona let her know you know. We’re just in the second trimester.”
She nodded. “No problem.”
“Congrats, Graeme,” Marcus said.
“Yeah, congrats.”
“Thanks. I’m not that…well, she had a hard time with the last one, so I’m worried about this one.”
It was kind of sweet seeing how flustered and worried he was. The big bear was worried about his lady.
