“You did? Thank you!” Gus exclaimed.
He glanced at Sasha, who looked as happy as Ezra felt about that.
“Dad, this is where Posey’s eye should be.” Gus pointed to the concave recess on Posey’s face. “The doctor took it out because she got afection.”
“Infection,” Sasha corrected him.
“In-fection,” Gus repeated. “Am I gonna get ainfection?”
“No, honey, but if you ever did, I’d get you to the doctor right away,” Ezra said. “The person who owned Posey didn’t take her to the doctor fast enough when her eye got sick. That’s why they had to take it out.”
“Maybe Doc could give Posey a new eye,” Gus suggested.
“If I could, I would,” Doc said from beside Sully. “Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s possible.”
“Oh.” Gus stared at the picture for a minute. “Guess we’ll just have to give her extra love.”
“That’s right, Gusto.” Sasha put her arm around him, hugging him against her side and sharing an emotional glance with Ezra.
“If we have kids, I hope they’re exactly like him,” Sully said.
“If his father is any measure of what he’ll be like as a teenager, you might want to reconsider that,” Cowboy teased.
“Why?” Sully asked. “Ezra’s wonderful.”
“Thank you, Sully, but you didn’t know me back in my troublemaking days,” Ezra said.
“You don’t have to worry about that, Sul,” Sasha said. “You’re marrying the biggest Boy Scout of them all. The worst thing your kids will probably do is boss around all the other kids on the playground.”
“I could tell you some stories about Cowboy,” Doc said.
“But you know my stories about you are just as bad, so shut your trap,” Cowboy warned, and Doc laughed.
“It’s always the quiet ones,” Billie said, eyeing Sasha.
“Why are you looking atme? Dare got into way more trouble than I ever did, and he is anythingbutquiet,” Sasha said.
“I seem to remember a dip ’n dash scenario that we had to handle the summer after your junior year, Sash,” Doc said.
“Really?” Ezra raised a brow at Sasha, imagining the teenage good girl sneaking into a pool to go skinny-dipping.
Sasha rolled her eyes. “Please. That’s nothing compared to all the stuff that you guys did. I still can’t believe Dad sent you guys to get us.”
“I thought Cowboy and Doc were going to rip those boys’ heads off,” Dare said.
“There were boys involved?” Ezra asked.
“Not for long,” Cowboy said.
“What’s dip ’n dash?” Sully asked.
“Skinny-dipping,” Sasha said. “I went with Bobbie and a few friends.”
“Oh.”Sully shrank back in her seat, her cheeks flaming.
Billie barked out a laugh. “If that’s not a guilty face, then I don’t know what is.”
“Cowboy might have caught me skinny-dipping once.” Sully buried her face in Cowboy’s chest.
