He’s in love with her, but he’s either in denial about it or he’s so preoccupied with everything around us that he can’t see what is as clear as day.

They call us heartbreakers. Isn’t it ironic?

We’ve played a dangerous game, and our hearts are the ones that might end up broken when everything is said and done.

THE NIGHT BEFORE THEfirst day of the National Skydiving Championship, Star Cove, California

––––––––

I’VE NEVER UNDERSTOODthe saying that you could cut the atmosphere with a knife until tonight.

This year’s National Skydiving Championship meet is taking place on our turf in Star Cove, so all eyes are on our little coastal town and our resident teams, the Cove Angels and Cove Devils.

Especially because both teams were crowned state champions at the end of the state meets, since their scores were tied.

I’ve never seen anyone share the glory of being crowned champions less happily than the Angels and Devils, and tension is at an all-time high.

The fact that Mom and Ken insist on pushing this new, friendly relationship between the two rival teams isn’t helping as much as they think.

The usual animosity between Angels and Devils isn’t gone, it’s just bubbling under the surface, and it’s apparent in every interaction.

“Here’s the jumping order for each event tomorrow. You should have a digital copy in your company email, but I thought it would be good for each of us to have a hard copy.” Kyle passes us the lineup as he comes back from his meeting with the meet director.

He’s been uncharacteristically quiet lately, devoting all his energy to supporting our team during meets, but I can’t help but notice the tightness of his smile.

“Did you get some copies for Ken and his guys too?” Mom asks.
