He chuckles. “Touché.”
“Talking about performance,” I begin. “Can I ask whom you selected for your team? Or is it too secret?”
JeanLuc nods. “Wild Horse will make an official announcement tomorrow, once we have formal acceptance by all the BASE jumpers involved, but I offered a spot to the four competitors who placed top at today’s invitational.”
That’s what I was hoping and fearing at the same time.
Channing placed first, followed by Jameson and Peyton, who did great even with the hangover from hell. Darrius came in fourth.
“I’m sure the guys will be excited. And Mom, Ken, and Kyle must be very proud of our new team.”
JeanLuc agrees. “It will be a French and American team. I offered spots as alternates to Niko and Trent too. Injuries aren’t uncommon in our sport, so it’s good to have a few extras.”
“Don’t remind me.” I shudder.
“Lenley,” JeanLuc murmurs, “I know you care about all of them. Please believe me, we’re never going to compromise on safety. I’d rather cancel a jump if something isn’t right. I promise.”
I lower my gaze. “But you can’t promise that nothing bad will happen.Papàalways followed the strictest safety standards, but BASE jumping is one of the most dangerous sports in the world.”
JeanLuc doesn’t sugarcoat it. “It is, but we’re going to be the safest daredevils you’ve ever seen, okay?”
“Okay.” I nod. “Now, go find my bestie and show her why the French are famous for being the best lovers in the world.”
His lips quirk into a satisfied grin. “Are you saying that because you’re half French,chérie?”
“You can bet your derrière on it. Now go, before she thinks you stood her up.”
23.

ONCE JEANLUC IS GONE, I take a deep breath.
