“You thought you could leave me, Amber?”

My brows furrow. “What do you mean, I wasn’t leaving? How did I get here?”

“I injected a drug into your system to knock you out and then brought you here.”

“Why? Where is here? What is going on, Paul?”

“This is a cabin my family owned.”

His face softens a bit as he moves closer to me, then squats down in front of me. “Do you remember when we escaped, The Wolves?”

I nod, confused about why he is talking about this. “Yeah, when those men came in and started shooting all the men at the warehouse.”

“Remember how we hunkered down and waited for the perfect moment.”

His hand then grips my face, forcing me to look at him. “Paul, please stop. You’re hurting me.”

His hands tighten even more and fuck it hurts. “You were mine first. We survived together and you belong to me. If I can’t have you, then no one will.”

That’s when it clicks. “Is this about Jake?” I whisper to him.

“There is no Jake,” he spits in my face.

All thoughts of self-preservation leave my mind. All I can think about is Jake. I’m not going to allow anyone to belittle that. We’ve been searching for each other for years and now we’re finally together.

“Jake is everything. He is the best man I’ve ever known. I trusted you. I thought of you as a friend. How dare you,” I yell back into his face.

As soon as I’m done screaming, we hear footsteps above us. Paul moves around me, putting his hand over my mouth. I try to scream, and he pulls out a gun from his waistband, pointing it to my head. Leaning down, he whispers in my ear, “Now, we wait for the perfect time.”

It’s obvious with the footsteps there are men up above us. The footsteps move all around, and I know deep in my bones it’s Jake. He’s come for me. He found me. After a few minutes, we hear murmured voices.

Paul starts banging on the pipe with his gun, “I’m going to get rid of him, so we can be together for the rest of our lives.”

His words send a shudder of fear down my back. This can’t be happening. He continues to make noise, all while I’m trying to figure out how I can get out of this alive. The door to the room opens forcing me to focus on the stairs, I hear footsteps. “Jake, he has a gun,” I yell out warning him.

“Shut up. Don’t worry, I’m going to enjoy killing him right in front of you.”

Chapter twenty-five

Jake

I slowly come down the basement stairs to find Paul standing behind my sunshine with a gun pointed at her head. This dumb fucker. My hands clench around the gun I'm holding.

I hold my gun up aiming right at him, but the dipshit is hiding behind her, not giving me a clear opening shot. I try to focus on her and how I can get around him when his voice cuts through, “I wouldn’t do that. Lower your gun, Jake, or she dies,” he says.

I don’t listen to this asshole. Lowering my gun isn’t going to happen. I don’t hear anything or anyone around me. I just focus on her, looking deep into her eyes. A tear drips down her cheeks. I mouthed to her, I love you.

Paul sees it and tightens his arms around her. My feet start to move on their own and an arm grabs my shoulder holding me back. I turn my head and see Zeev standing there, but no Frank. Where did he go? “Jake, stand down,” Zeev orders.

I get it. I don’t like it but I get it. It's time for me to stay put to keep her safe. I turn my eyes back and focus on Paul and Amber. I can see the fear in her eyes. Paul yells, causing her to flinch, “I said, put the gun down.”

“Okay. Okay. I’m lowering my gun,” I say as I point my gun to the ground. Zeev follows suit. But Paul shakes his head, pushing the gun more into her head. “On the ground.”

“You got it,” I say, as we place our guns on the ground. Once we’re done, Paul gives us a creepy grin pulling Amber closer to him, and then takes a deep sniff of her hair. “Did you know that I’ve lived near you and Amber my whole life?”

Amber stiffens confusion on her face.

“I’ve never seen you before.”
