“Who do they belong to? Are these from another woman?”
I look at her confused. She’s pissed…and jealous. And I kind of love it. She thinks these clothes are from another woman. I walk over and rub my hand down her spine. “Baby, these are not from another woman. I had my friend's wife grab these for you. I’ve never had another woman in this apartment before. I told you, it’s only ever been you.”
She visibly relaxes with my words, “I’m sorry.”
I grin at her, then I kiss the tip of her nose. “I’m happy that I make you just as crazy as you make me.”
I turn back to grabbing clothes, getting dressed in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. Once I’m done, I glance back at Amber. She’s still staring at all the clothes that I purchased, trying to decide what to wear.
“I will meet you out in the living room. Take your time.”
Amber just nods her head.
It only takes a few minutes before Amber walks out of the room, and my eyes bulge out of my head. I look her up and down, dressed in leggings that hug her perky ass in the best way. She has a white crop top that ends right under her tits leaving just a sliver of creamy skin showing, and all I want to do is lick her from head to toe. “Fuck, you’re gorgeous.”
With my compliment, her face blushes and it crawls down her neck to her chest. I’d like to find out how far that blush goes. I adjust myself knowing we don’t have time for me to find out, no matter how much I want to.
“Let’s go, sunshine,” I say as I place my hand on her back, escorting her out of my apartment and down to the car.
“Here you go,” I say as I open the passenger door. She smiles at me as she climbs in.
“Such a gentleman.”
I give her a wink as I close the door. Moving around the hood of the car, I drop down in the driver's seat. She looks over at me, and I see the light and love in her eyes. When we first reconnected, it was dim but not gone. From now on, I’ll do everything in my power to make sure it stays shining bright.
Even as kids she’s always had this special light about her. She always made me feel like I could do anything. I want to keep the light in her eyes forever. It’s the reason I call her Sunshine. She has rays of sunshine radiating from her, pushing the darkness within me away.
Her soft voice interrupts my thoughts of her when she asks, “Where are we going, Jake?”
I don’t answer her right away. I know I need to tell her, but I don’t want her to worry anymore. I want her to know she’s safe. That she will always be safe. But if I tell her now, she might run. I answer as vaguely as possible. “I have some people I want you to meet.”
She turns her body in her seat so she’s facing me with her beautiful grin. “Are we going to see your parents?”
I stiffen a bit, I can tell she’s trying to lighten the mood, but all it does is bring back memories that I don’t want to relive. “My parents are dead.”
The blood drains from her face. “What happened?”
This isn’t how I wanted to tell her but I can’t avoid every question. I keep my eyes on the road as I recite what happened, no emotion just facts. “When you were first taken, I was determined to find you, and my parents were helping me. My dad was asking his contacts about where to find you. My mom tried to reach out to your parents and other friends they had in common. We got close and we found out that you were taken by The Wolves, but the closer we got, the more dangerous it got. Old Lady Marelle tried to stop us by setting a bomb off in our house. The bomb killed my parents, but I survived. It was a week before graduation. That’s when I joined the military.”
I hear her sniffle and when I look over at her face, she has tears running down her cheeks. “Don’t cry, baby. You don’t need to cry.”
“I’m so sorry, Jake. I didn’t mean to.”
I raise one of my eyebrows in confusion, “What do you mean, you didn’t mean to?”
Her eyes move away from me, and she looks at her feet. “It’s all my fault that you went through so much. If we weren’t friends, if I stayed away from you, if you weren’t looking for me, your parents would still be alive.”
I grab her hand and squeeze. “Look at me, Sunshine.”
She shakes her head, refusing to look at me by keeping her eyes on the ground. I squeeze her hand once again, making my tone harsher. “Amber, I said look at me.”
She finally looks up at me and our eyes connect. The fucking light in her eyes dimmed again, and it kills me. Fuck! She needs to know this isn’t her fault. “Amber, this is not your fault. It’s the people who took you. It’s their fault. Not mine. Not yours. Theirs.”
She doesn’t say anything. She turns away from me like she can’t look at me any longer. I allow her to look away this time. She needs to be able to think for a few minutes and process my words.
We’re silent the rest of the ride, but once we start to pull into a gated driveway, Amber straightens in her seat. I enter the code, opening up the gate. As we drive through, she asks, “Whose house is this?”
“My friend Zeev and his wife Blanche live here. This is their country house.”
