The ringing in my ears becomes louder as blood rushes to my head. My whole body starts to heat up, and my breath gets shallower and shallower. What the hell is happening to me? Come on stay calm, just breathe.
I try to hold on to something as my legs start to shake, and then suddenly I’m staring at the ceiling. “Amber, are you okay?” I hear from somewhere in the room.
I can’t say anything or even recognize the voice. A hand touches my shoulder. “Amber, what’s happening? Are you okay?”
I recognize that voice. A face comes into my view and I try to focus on it. “Paul?”
Why is he down here? I take a deep breath. I’m able to calm my heart, at least enough to think. He should be at the door. “What are you doing down here?”
“I was walking by for my break when I heard a scream and came to check it out. It was a good thing I was walking by, you passed out for a second.”
I try to sit up, but my head swims a bit. “Take it easy. Let me help you get back to your office.”
I just nod allowing Paul to help me up and walk me back to my office. He grabs a bottle of water from the mini fridge and hands it to me. I take a sip. “Paul, I think someone is watching me.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’ve felt someone watching me ever since we left The Wolves. Lately though it’s been worse.”
He looks back at the door, then back at me. “Are you sure?”
I take a sip of my water before answering, then I shake my head. “No. I’m not sure.”
“Maybe just get some rest.”
I take a deep breath, “You're right. I’m going to go home and rest.”
"Okay. Let me go get my car. I’ll take you.”
I grab his forearm before he can go, “No. I’ll be fine. I’m sure I’m worrying about nothing. I’ll just take the train home.”
“Amber, I’m not sure that’s a good idea after what happened.”
“I don’t care. You stay here and finish working,” I snap.
Paul doesn’t say anything. He just leaves me in a silent room. Thankfully, I don’t have that feeling of someone watching me right now. I stay in my chair as I come up with a plan. I need to leave.
They found me. I know they have. As I gather my things, I text Ella so she won’t come looking for me, and head back to my apartment. Tonight I’ll rest and then tomorrow I’m leaving. I will not go back to them, no matter what.
Chapter fifteen
Jake
I pull up to The Tower at the end of the night, ready to get Amber. I have so many questions, but I also want to show her that she is it for me. I know I need to hold back my feelings. I don’t want to. But if I tell her exactly how I feel right now, I could possibly scare her. And that scares me.
First I need to find out more about her relationship with Paul. How did they become friends? I know that they were captured together. Did they escape together? Are they more than friends? The thought of them being more than friends makes me see red. I clench my jaw and I remind myself I’ve seen them together. There is no chemistry between them, well at least on her part. The biggest question is does he feel the same?
Frank, Zeev, and I spent all day searching through his background, including all the papers that The Wolves had on when he was captured and locked up with Amber. It was hard to read about some of the things that Amber had to deal with, especially the medical records from what looks to be like beatings. I don’t even want to imagine what life must’ve been like for her. Even the small bit of information I have is too much. If those involved were still alive, I would hunt them down and kill them slowly.
We didn’t find anything out of the ordinary on Paul, but it doesn’t help to calm my fears. Deep in my gut, I know that something is not right.
When I pull in, the parking lot is mostly empty. Only a few stragglers and employees are roaming around. I’m ready to get her and take her home. I have plans for tonight. Plans that include taking her to my bed and doing unspeakable things to her body. Shit, now I’m hard.
I adjust my cock as I get out of the car and head into the building, but Amber’s nowhere in sight. I head for her office, but I’m blocked by a body stepping right in front of me. “What do you need Paul?” I sneer as his name comes out of my mouth.
I can’t help but clench my fists. This guy will be lucky if I don’t knock him out. I glare at him.
I got to give it to him. He starts off strong, glaring back at me. He withstands the look I’m giving him, but I can tell it’s hard for him. The longer we remain in this silent standoff, the madder I get. Finally, he breaks the silence first, “She already went home.”
