I look over at the gorgeous woman standing in the doorway, a T-shirt down to her mid-thighs, her biker shorts peeking out from underneath, her bright blonde hair thrown up into some kind of bun on the top of her head. I stiffen when I realize I’m not the only one seeing her like this.
Even though they seem to be close, I don’t like him. Something about him feels off and I’m going to find out why. I know he doesn’t work for The Wolves, at least not under the current leadership. Was he working for Old Lady Marelle? Or is he up to something else? I need to call Frank to get a background check on him.
When I hear Amber laugh, I’m pulled from my thoughts and see her pouring a cup of coffee for this dipshit. I walk behind her, grab her waist, and kiss her neck. I look up and see Paul staring at us, with his eyes narrowed in on where I’m kissing her.
Take that, asshole.
I glance up at the clock. I let out a small sigh. Unfortunately, I need to meet with Zeev to find out if he knows more about when Amber was captured. I feel uneasy about leaving her behind but I get the feeling that Paul won’t hurt her at least not right now. Besides, I’ll call one of my men to come and watch over her apartment. I whisper in her ear, "I've got to go, but I’ll see you tonight?”
She spins in my arms wrapping her arms around my neck. “I have to work tonight. But you can come over after.” She looks away and mutters, “If you want to.”
I grab her chin, forcing her to look at me, “I will see you tonight. I’ll meet you at work and give you a ride home.”
"I don’t need a ride home, Jake.”
“Amber, I said I was giving you a ride home from work. Don’t make me worry about you more than I need to.”
She lets out a cute huff and then answers, “Okay.”
I give her a quick kiss on the lips, move back to her room, put my clothes back on, and grab my wallet and keys. I pull out my phone and text one of my best guys to keep an eye out and make sure nothing goes awry.
When I make it back to the living room, Paul and Amber have continued their conversation over coffee. I give her a quick kiss on her cheek, and Amber looks up at me. “I’ll be at the Tower tonight,” I remind her, then I head out the door.
When I get to my car, I pull up my contacts and call Frank. “Hey, man. What's up?”
“I need you to look someone up for me, his name is Paul Matthews. I want everything you can find on him. He was with Amber when she was captured. I’ll meet with Zeev and Blanche to find out if they know anything.”
“Got it, boss.”
Hanging up, I call Zeev and his voice rings out over my car speakers. “Hey, man.”
“Hey, I’m heading your way. I need to talk with you and Blanche.”
“Everything okay?”
“I want to look through that paperwork that we found years ago when we took that last warehouse. We know that Amber was there, but I want to know more about a guy who was with her named Paul. Specifically, if he was a prisoner or if he worked for The Wolves.”
“Of course. I don’t know off the top of my head if Paul worked for The Wolves, but Blanche still has everything. There was so much and it was painful for her to go through so she is still making her way. I thought you didn’t want to know about Amber’s time at the warehouse.”
“Things have changed. She is mine and this guy that’s around her all the time gives me an uneasy feeling.”
“Why don’t you come here now, and I can help you look through things? I’ll ask Blanche if she knows anything too.”
“Be there in twenty.” I hang up and head out to find some answers.

I pull up in front of Zeev and Blanche’s house. I hope we’re able to find out why Paul was there with Amber. My gut is telling me that something is off about him and I always trust my gut.
I knock on the door and one of their bodyguards answers, lets me in and tells me everyone is in the kitchen. I’m surprised to see Frank sitting at the dining room table with Blanche and Zeev–papers strewn everywhere.
“What’s going on here?” I ask.
As soon as the words leave my mouth, all three of their eyes swing to me.
I clear my throat. “Someone want to explain?”
Zeev is the first one to speak, “We’re doing what you asked. Going through the papers that we found in that warehouse four years ago. Blanche had filed most of it away. Frank started a background check on Paul like you asked, but nothing has come back yet. We did find a file on him from the warehouse. He’s the son of a gambler, his mom left when he was young, and it seemed his dad owed money to The Wolves. When he couldn’t pay them back, they took Paul. They took him around the same time they took Amber.”
