I cock an eyebrow at her. “To see the consequences of your actions?”
“He’s dangerous,” she insists. She puts the box on the counter and opens it. “This isn’t about a North Shore feud anymore. Nate is pissing off the Wolves.”
She takes out a couple of band-aids and some disinfectant.
I swallow thickly as she turns to me. “What do you mean, pissing off the Wolves?”
“I don’t know exactly what he’s doing, but people are being threatened, bodies are piling up, and it’s coming from the Wolves. If he carries on, he’ll start a full-on war between the Bratva and the Cosa Nostra. This is bigger than you and me, and it’s fucking bigger than NSC and the Kings.”
Nate mentioned they’d heard he’s back, and that’s why he’s keeping a guard at the door.
A million thoughts still running through my mind, I ask, “Surely the Lucianos had something to say when you switched from them to the Bianco family. Do they know about the war Nate is starting? They won’t let him.”
“I don’t know. I haven’t been in touch with Vito Luciano in a long time.”
I try to take the band-aids from her, but she pulls her hand away. “Sit on the counter.”
I don’t know what goes through my head, but I do it. I hoist myself on the marble counter in front of my lifelong enemy, and I let her spray my cut with antiseptic.
She dabs my skin with cotton, and her eyes cross with mine.
“You need to do something, Kay. He’s planning some bullshit move and we’re all at risk.”
“Right. Because it’s so easy to do something against Nate’s will. You put me in here, now you figure it out without me.”
When she sticks the band-aid, she presses hard, and I slap her hand away. “Bitch.”
“I just needed to check the tough girl everyone knows as Kayla, the ruthless King is still in there somewhere. What, you’re just going to let Nate turn you into a fucking housewife who’s never even allowed to leave her house? Wake the fuck up.”
I push her away, standing again. “Do you have any fucking idea the shit he has on me? Or what it would cost me to fight back? I’ll get a one-way ticket to prison for lying under oath if I leave. A mansion in Stoneview is better than cement walls, don’t you think?”
“With Nathan White?” she snorts. “I’m not sure.”
Crossing her arms over her chest, she looks at me from top to bottom and back up.
“I thought I had an indestructible woman as my enemy. Had I known it would be that easy to take you down—”
“Shut the fuck up, Emma. You don’t know anything that asshole is capable of.”
She shrugs. “I saw him commit cold-blooded murder because Law tried to kill you the night of the Death Cage fight. I’m pretty sure I have an idea.”
My mouth drops open. “What?”
“I just don’t get how he stays so impassive when he kills.”
“Because he’s a fucking psychopath.”
“A psychopath who cares about keeping you alive.”
“To fucking torture me.” It takes all of me not to scream in her face.
“I need to go back before he starts wondering why I’m taking so long. I don’t even know why he asked me to come today, but I was told by some of my men that he asked them too. He’s up to something.”
I clench my jaw, different plans filtering through my thoughts until something finally comes to the forefront. It’s crazy and will most certainly get me killed, but it’s something.
“Give me your phone,” I say in a hurry.
She doesn’t hesitate, digging into her pocket. “What are you doing?”
