"That's not even the most suspicious aspect." Even more intrigued by that cryptic comment, I grab it and flip through the contents. Which does not take as long as it should.

"Are you kidding? There’s hardly anything in here.” Definitely nothing that should’ve led to Harry’s conviction. “The jury deemed him guilty with no weapon, basing their decision merely on the footage of him leaving and the blood on his hands? The latter could’ve easily been explained as Harry checking the victim for a pulse or trying to save him.”

He nods, agreeing with my frustration and doubts. "It was a bench trial, by the way."

"This is bullshit," I declare as I throw the folder down. "She was right. He was a scapegoat."

"She have any suspects?" I tell him what she shared about Sean. "That is a much stronger motive for murder than Harry’s.”

"How the hell are we going to prove it?"

"My tech guys are quietly looking into it."

"I have to help her," I mumble.

"She's the one, isn't she?" I instantly tell him yes.

"I just have to convince her," I inform him with a grin.

"From what you told me, she sounds like a handful."

"That’s an understatement,” I respond before continuing, “but she’s worth it."

"While I was snooping, I discovered Sean will be attending the annual Silver Falls Gala."

“Fuck,” I groan. My parents host that event every year. It's a pain, in my opinion, not to mention an excuse for those with money to kiss the ass of others who have it. My mother also sees it as an opportunity to aim women she deems appropriate in my direction.

"The best way to get information from him without drawing attention to our plan is for you to use your status." He has a point, which I loathe as I've never used who I am to get ahead in life. But I will gladly do so when it pertains to Halo.

"We'll go,” I concede. “You and Grace should, too." He shudders at that, despising the idea of going as much as I do. Rising, he glares at me, then says we’ll talk later and leaves.

As I reread every detail, trying to commit it to memory, I hear Halo ask, “Was that your cop friend?” When I look up, I almost swallow my tongue when I find her wearing one of my t-shirts that ends above her knee and her hair is piled on top of her head. But what stuns me the most are her tattoos. Her jumpsuit hid them from view, as did her own clothes when I picked her up, yet now the full-sleeves are visible for all to see. And I can’t stop staring at her.

"You’re stunning." She smiles as she sits beside me, a slight blush covering her cheeks.

"You both think he was set up, too, don't you?"

"It’s looking that way."

"So, what's our next move? Visit my brother?" As it’s probably the best option, allowing me the chance to look him in the eyes, see for myself if he’s lying, I tell her we should.

"How about tomorrow?" As my hand rests on her knee, her soft skin has me fighting not to kiss her. Resisting, though barely, I get to my feet and help her to her own. “Let’s get some sleep.”

"Thank you, Caleb," she responds, then presses her mouth to mine. Holy fuck! Before I can even process what just happened, let alone react to it, she walks away.

I knew I was gone the second I heard her voice, yet I didn't realize how far until this moment. Halo is definitely trouble, and I'm going to love every single minute of it.

Chapter 4

Halo

Istand next to Caleb and listen as he talks to the guard. It’s been weeks since I’ve seen Harry. He was upset that I was going after the truth in regards to Sean, but I think the majority of it stemmed from him being in jail. The imminent meeting is making me nervous, though I'm also concerned about the intense feelings Caleb brings out in me. Whether it’s him taking the role of my knight in shining armor, him personally, or both, he makes my heart race. Yes, he’s attractive, however, it's more than that. He's sweet, charming, and funny. When he pulls me from my thoughts, wondering if I’m ready, I’m unable to do more than nod.

Upon entering the private room reserved for lawyers to speak with their clients, I once more state, “I still wish you would’ve let me call and give him a heads up.”

"I want to catch him off guard, we’re more likely to get the truth the way." That makes sense. As we wait for Harry, it seems to take forever before he’s brought in, cuffed and wearing the all too familiar orange jumpsuit. I tear up as I take him in. He doesn’t belong here.

Upon seeing me, Harry's eyes widen as he glares at me. "What the hell are you up to, Halo?"
