"Don't talk to your sister like that," Caleb snaps, drawing Harry’s attention.
"Who the fuck are you?" He asks as he takes a seat, resting his restrained hands on the table.
"I'm your lawyer now,” Caleb informs him. “And I want you to tell me everything that happened the night Mayor Patrick died." I guess we’re not easing in to it.
"Halo, I told you not to waste your time on me."
Hoping my words scare him, I bluntly remind him, "This is our last shot. Just shut up and tell him. Otherwise, you will spend the rest of your life in here." I’m relieved when it works.
"Why did you run?" Harry reiterates what I’d told Caleb earlier, that he was drunk, scared, and he panicked. Caleb makes notes in his leatherbound legal pad, then closes it.
“Thank you for sharing that with me, Harry. I need you to sit tight, okay?” Seeing the hope in my brother’s gaze, I place my hands over his and urge him not to lose hope.
He promises he won’t, then pleads with me to, “Take care of yourself, sis."
"I always do." And with that, we leave, and I hide my fear that this might not be the Hail Mary we need. It isn’t until we return to the hotel we’re staying at for the night and his arms wrap around me from behind that I realize I haven’t said one word to Caleb.
"You good?"
“Seeing him there was hard, and I can’t help but feel we’re struggling to climb a mountain."
I shift to face him and he drops his lips to my forehead, promising, "I've got you. I'll do everything in my power to make this right for Harry." Having someone else look out for me is an odd experience. I mean, I’ve always had my brother, but that’s different. And our mom was too lost in the alcohol and numerous men to be dependable.
"Even if that means holding me as I cry when this goes to shit?" I ask, my attempt at a joke.
"Yes,” Caleb answers without hesitation before he kisses me. I embrace him as the heat between us seems to ignite. He grips my waist and breaks apart long enough to warn me that if this isn’t what I want, I need to let him know now.
"I want you." Taking it for the invitation that it is, he moves us toward the bed and lowers me to the mattress as he stands above me, still clad in his business attire.
"What's so funny?" He asks with a smile as I giggle.
"I was thinking how I’ve never seen you in anything but a three-piece suit, yet I’m about to see you naked." I feel slightly embarrassed after admitting that, but he laughs, too, putting me at ease. Then that’s forgotten as we both quickly take off each other’s clothes, and I feel as if I’m shedding my stress with it. It’s been years since I’ve been with anyone and I hadn’t had the desire to change that until meeting Caleb.
Despite him being so much stronger than mine, I’ve never felt safer. He explores my body thoroughly, both with his mouth and hands. The latter spends time on my breasts. As he removes his final article, his boxers, I instinctively grip his hard cock, satisfied at the growl that springs from him.
"Careful, Halo,” he warns. “It's been a very long time for me. You keep touching me like this and it’ll be over before we begin.” This only spurs me on, causing me to run my palm up and down his member. Deciding to play dirty himself, he bites on my nipples causing me to gasp. He then proceeds to work his way down, not missing an inch. My nails dig into his back as he reaches my core, doing something to me no one else has. I plead with him to let me come, the pleasure ready to break through at his next ministration. “Give it to me,” he commands and I let it take me over. Completely spent, I can’t do anything more than lay there for a few minutes.
When I can finally speak, in a breathy voice, I admit, “That was amazing."
"We aren’t done yet, baby." And without any warning, he plunges inside me.
"Don't stop," I beg him.
"Never," he agrees as he thrusts harder. As he brings me to another orgasm while he finds his own, I zone out, unknowingly worrying him.
"Halo?” When I open my eyes, he urgently asks, “Are you okay?”
“Never better,” I rush to answer. Stroking his face, I tell him, “Thank you.”
He laughs, telling me that’s unnecessary. “Besides, we’re going to be doing that a lot.” Then he makes good on that as he starts round two.
This is the start of something big. I know that in my heart. All I can do is hope it doesn’t all come crashing down.
Chapter 5
Caleb
"Your parents sound like assholes," Halo bluntly declares. We checked out this morning and are now on our way to Clive and Grace’s. I’d already sent him my notes from the meeting and asked for his help proving Harry was railroaded.
