“Ah, I see… no, of course, I’m glad to help. I’ll be right there.”
Hastily, she put the phone down, straightened herself, and finally turned to me.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Chambers, but I’ve got to go. Something urgent has come up.”
Once again, she turned away, giving me no clues about what was happening.
“Serena.”
She bent down to retrieve her bag.
“What is the matter? What’s happened?”
“That was one of my clients. Sadly, her husband passed away, and she has no other family, no one to talk to, and she needs me. So, I’m afraid I have to go immediately.”
She tried to pass me to leave, but I caught her by the elbow, gently pulling her into me.
“Mr. Chambers.”
“Rhett, call me Rhett.”
“Rhett, I really must go.”
Still holding onto her arm with one hand, I used my free hand to retrieve my phone from my pocket and dial Russell’s number. He answered on the second ring.
“Russell, I need you to pull the car around immediately.”
“Yes, sir, I’ll be right there.”
I put the phone back into my pocket and led the way out of her office.
“Rhett, what are you doing?”
“I’ve called for my driver, who will take you wherever you need to go. Let’s call it a habit of mine. One I am coming to enjoy.”
We just arrived at the bank of elevators, and I was half expecting her to go off on a rant dismissing me and my offer.
However, to my surprise, she glanced up at me with beautiful green eyes, murmuring, “Thank you.”
Chapter 7
Rhett
We sat in the back of the car as Russell lowered the privacy window.
“Ms Parker, where would you like me to take you?” he asked.
“220 East 60th Street.”
Immediately, I recognized it.
“Isn’t that one of the addresses involved in our negotiations?”
“Yes.”
She chuckled, but there was no humor in her laugh.
What the hell was going on? Why wouldn’t she talk to me? My thoughts ran away with me, not knowing how to act or what to say. The more time I spent with Serena, the more I felt control and understanding slip through my fingers. And I wouldn’t say I liked it. I wanted this woman, but to my surprise, I struggled to get her. Unexpectedly, she broke the silence.
