I notice him take slow, deep breaths, opposite my fast-shallow gusts.

Tentatively, he moves closer, reaching out and pushing a curl that came loose from my ponytail out of my face and behind my ear, then resting his hand behind my neck.

Unintentionally, I lick my lips. I watch as his eyes dart from my eyes to my mouth.

Trustingly, I lift my chin, and it’s all the invitation he needs.

His mouth plunges into mine.

My breath hitches at the feel of his soft, firm lips against mine, and I whimper as his tongue strokes against my lower lip, coaxing my mouth open. I can feel his groan vibrate through his chest as his tongue captures mine.

The feel of his hands all over me is intoxicating. Molten waves of pleasure began crashing through me.

He pulls me into him, rubbing my body up against his.

I can feel the bulge of his solid and muscular arms as my hands travel up his arms and around the back of his neck. I was utterly lost in the sensation of him consuming me. We are all teeth, tongues, and lips, biting, sucking, and devouring each other as if a dam has broken wide open.

I’m not sure how long we kissed when suddenly tiny drops of rain fell upon us.

Those few drops turned into a full-on downpour within less than a minute.

Letting out a frustrated grunt, he breaks our kiss, slides his hand down mine, and takes my hand, entwining our fingers.

“Looks like we’re going to have to head back.”

Even though he chuckled as he spoke, I could see the frustration of the interruption.

Holding hands with one another, we jog back down the path. The rain has turned into a torrential downpour, and the sky is lit with lightning and thunder.

Knowing we needed to get inside to safety as soon as possible, I suggested we take shelter in a country inn just a few minutes down another path instead of the thirty minutes it would take us to walk back to the car.

Chapter 10

Serena

We managed to make it to the Inn but were both soaked to the bone.

Upon entering, we were greeted by a lady in her late sixties. She had salt and pepper hair, with her roots being more white than gray, with a warm smile and kind eyes.

“Looks like you two got caught out in the storm. Welcome to Spring Falls Inn. My name is Ann. How can I help you?”

Rhett approached the desk, shaking raindrops from his thick hair.

“Is there anywhere we can go to dry off and wait for the storm to pass? I’ll pay whatever the room’s rate is.”

“I’m afraid the only room left available is the Royal Suite. The charge is $185 a night.”

He doesn’t hesitate.

“That would be great.”

He gives her one of his charming smiles.

“You wouldn’t, by any chance, have any clothing I could purchase for us to change into?”

“We have sweats that our guests can buy as souvenirs. Would that be okay?”

“That would be great. Thank you.”
