“Outstanding? Ha!” Ty growls as he walks up to me, leaving an inch of space between us as he pokes me in the chest.

He has no idea how close he is to getting his ass kicked.

His spittle hits my face as he says, “You don’t have the power you think you have.”

“I have all the power.” Looking past Ty, I set eyes on my brother. “I just hope and pray you had no role in what he did at the Y. Aurora is your niece — your blood.”

My brother looks at me and says, “All I did was step outside for a second. I had no idea he’d even been there until you mentioned it just now.”

“Good, because if you are lying, Mom would be so disappointed in you.”

My brother runs at me, shoving Ty out of his way. He’s shaking. “Fuck you! Don’t ever talk to me about our mother.”

“Mom would be ashamed of you for turning against your only family.” I turn and leave, unafraid of any of them.

These people are all out for themselves, they don’t care about my health or my happiness.

I thought we were friends. I guess I was wrong.

My head’s a mess.

I don’t know what will happen from here.

My band is on the brink of greatness, but it will fail if we don’t all come together to face our demons.

Lucy has helped me face mine, but it’s not enough.

Driving to clear my mind, I find myself parked in front of Lucy’s apartment. Going up to the door, I knock, and she answers the door, stepping back to let me in. “I’m glad you came, Apollo.”

Before I walk in, I have to ask, “How are you not mad at me for bringing this shit into your life?”

She takes my hand, pulling me inside her warm, loving home. “You’re my family. A little drama comes along with being part of a family.”

I’m her family?

He’s clearly shaken.

I can understand. His manager has stabbed him in the back. He wouldn’t be human if that didn’t bother him.

“I’ve got some homemade chicken noodle soup simmering on the stove. I’ll get a bowl for you.”

Pulling him with me into the living room, I get him to sit down at the small dining table. “Crackers or a grilled cheese to go with it?”

A tiny sparkle brings light to his eyes that had been dim. “What kind of cheese?”

“Cheddar.”

Nodding, he sits down. “Grilled cheese, then. And maybe a nice tall glass of lemonade or OJ?”

“Got it.” Smiling, I run my hands over his tense shoulders. “Maybe after you eat, I’ll give you a backrub.”

“You don’t have to do that.” He grins. “But I won’t stop you either.”

“I want to do it. Aurora is down for a nap anyway. Otherwise, she’d get in the way of a good massage.”
