“Now, that’s a plan I can get behind.”

With that, we loaded up and headed back to the clubhouse. As we pulled in, I looked over to Jenna and Luna, and it hit me. I thought I was helping Jenna when I let her and Luna come stay with me, but it was the other way around. They were the ones who’d helped me. They’d brought me back to reality and showed me what it was like to have it all.

Now that I had it, there was no way in hell I was ever letting it go.

Jenna

I had Luna back. She was lying right here in the bed next to me, and I owed it all to Lawson and his brothers. They brought her back to me, and I felt like my world was finally back on its axis. It would’ve never happened without Lawson.

There was no doubt that I’d fallen for him. I’d fallen hard and fast. I didn’t know what was going to come of us. I wanted to believe we had something special and would make it to the end.

But there was a piece of me that wondered if he was just another lesson that life had to teach me and that I wouldn’t get to keep him. I didn’t doubt that we had something good—something special. I knew that we did, but I wasn’t the kind of girl who got something special.

I’d already lost so much. It was what I knew. It was what I’d become accustomed to. But I loved Lawson. I really, really loved him.

And for my sake and for Luna’s, I was going to hold on to the hope that we could make a life together because I couldn’t imagine making it through the day without him.

I slipped my arm around Luna and pulled her close. It wasn’t long before she started squirming. “Momma, you’re squishing me.”

“Sorry, honey. I just can’t seem to help myself.” I’d already checked her over. There wasn’t a scratch on her, and she assured me that the mean man hadn’t touched her. While it could’ve been much worse, I knew the experience would leave its mark, and I wanted to do everything in my power to make sure that it was a small one. “How are you feeling?”

“I’m okay.”

“Are you sure? Are you hungry? Do you wanna go get a snack?”

“I’m not hungry.” She sat up and asked, “When are we going home?”

“Soon.” I thought it was sweet that she thought of Lawson’s place as home. It was the first one she’d really had. “We just have to give Lawson some time to take care of a few things.”

“What’s he doing?”

Before I could answer, there was a tap on the door. I’d hoped it was Lawson, but I opened it to find Skid standing there with a tray full of coffee and snacks. “I thought you girls might want a bite to eat.”

“Skid!” Luna gasped.

“Hey there, kiddo.” He walked over and placed the tray on the desk. “How you doing?”

“Momma keeps asking me that.”

“She’s just worried.” He knelt down in front of her and smiled. “That’s what moms do.”

She nodded, then turned her focus over to the tray of food. Once she saw the animal crackers, her eyes lit up. She quickly grabbed them and handed them to me, waiting patiently as I opened them for her. “You want to play your game on my phone?”

She nodded excitedly.

I pulled it out of my purse and offered it to her. With her crackers in hand, she crawled back up on the bed and started playing. Knowing she wasn’t paying us any mind, I turned to Skid and asked, “Where’s Lawson?”

“He’s taking care of a few things.”

“I feel like I haven’t really seen him. I was out of it when he brought us here.”

“Yeah, you were, but don’t worry. You’ll be seeing him soon enough.” He leaned against the desk and smiled. “So, you two are a thing, huh?”

“I’m not the one to ask about that.”

“I don’t know. I think you are.”

“Well, if I have a say in it, and I’m not all that sure I do, I’d say yeah.” I gave him a shrug. “There’s definitely something there.”
