“Or maybe you were racing and got caught.”
My first thought was Jesse, but he wouldn’t have been dumb enough to call only me in. I knew all the places he raced at, including any hidden spots, and he had to know I would turn him in immediately if he did this to me.
And I didn’t think the goons after my dad would have any reason to turn me in. Wouldn’t that just set them back further on getting money from me?
“Don’t we get a phone call?” I asked, looking back at the crew. “Or several.”
He nodded, pulling me back out and bringing me over to the nearby desk.
“I’m going to need my phone for the number.”
He gave a sarcastic smile. “We don’t do that here.”
Ash laughed. “You better, because I’m going to be calling my dad.”
Panic tore through me because I knew how pissed her dad would be with all of us, and at this point, I was worried he would be pissed enough not to let me have a chance on the team.
“I’ll call someone!” I said quickly, holding out my hand from my phone. “But I need my phone, and then Holt doesn’t have to come down here and yell at you.”
The sheriff rolled his eyes, but dug out my phone, his eyes not leaving it as I pulled up my contacts, and hit Chase’s number into the phone.
It rang a few times before he picked up.
“Hello?”
“Hey, it’s Scout.”
“Did you get a new number or something?” he asked.
“No, but I do need some help.”
“Alright,” he said wearily. “Where are you?”
I paused, not knowing how he would react to this. “Jail.”
Silence filled the line and for a second, I thought he had hung up, but then I heard the faint sound of laughter. It grew louder and he must have pulled the phone back to his face.
“Did you say jail?”
“Yes, the crew and I are here and need some help getting out. I thought our lawyer could help.”
“Yourlawyer?”
“Yes, mine.”
A deep rumble came over the phone. “Say that again and I might come help.”
“Do you mean our lawyer?”
“No, the other part.”
I fought my smile. “Mine.”
“Yeah, that. I like that. Is everybody watching you right now?”
“Pretty much so keeping it professional would be great,” I said, plastering a smile on my face.
“What are they saying you did?”
