“Put me down!”
“Why? It’s only fair that I get you just as wet,” he said, laughing so hard my body shook along with his.
I only stared for a second. I wasn’t sure how everything he said sounded so dirty, but it seemed to shoot a thrill for me each time.
“Put me downrightnow.”
“You threw a bucket of water on me. You have no authority to boss me around.”
“You were trying to boss me around first!”
“Only because I like when you get all angry and flustered. I didn’t actually think you were going to listen. Then again, you seemed to take your own interpretation of what I said. I’ll be more clear in the future.”
“Put. Me. Down.”
He finally set me down, waiting until my feet touched the ground before stepping back. I thought I would be relieved, butit didn’t help when I noticed his shirt was now clinging to him. The wet t-shirt left nothing to the imagination.
He shot me a winning smile. “You got me there. Maybe I should go get a Hellcat. Honestly, that might be pretty fun. Want to go out racing tonight? Maybe you could race me and try to win the car.”
“I’m busy.”
“Too busy to race?”
“They are having the first round of qualifying races at Holt tomorrow. I don’t want to be out all night messing around street racing when I have to focus. Tomorrow will determine if I move on or not, so we will be there all day and either celebrating or drinking my emotions away after.”
“Interesting that you failed to mention it all day. I guess if you win at these races, I should expect you to kick my ass finally?”
“I think you could expect me to kick your ass the next time we race no matter what.”
Kye yelled to Chase that he was leaving as he headed out to his car.
“That’s my ride home today since Fox picked me up.” The shirt still clung to him and his hair fell in a damp mess, those few stray pieces falling across his forehead. It was becoming pathetic how much I liked seeing them there.
“Kye?”
“Yeah, problem?”
“No,” I said, wondering how he had gotten on Kye’s good side, too. “But I would suggest putting on the harness immediately.”
“Worried about my safety now?”
“Worried about Kye going to jail if you get hurt, Mr. Lawyer.” He smirked, taking a small step forward before thinking better of coming any closer.
“Since you’ll be busy this week, I guess I’ll be seeing more of you next week for the car?”
“I would say so.”
“The worst news I’ve heard all week,” he said, his eyes dropping to my lips. “You’ll do fine at your races. Just imagine me in the other cars, fueling your hate and attempting to finally win against me.
“That’s actually a great idea.”
Kye honked again.
“Good luck tomorrow, ankle-biter. I’m sure you’ll do amazing.”
He headed towards Kye’s car, and my heart flipped again when he turned back, shooting me a smile and waving as he slid into the passenger seat.
I had spent my first full day with Chase and somehow, I felt lighter than I had felt in weeks.
