“Better start believing it, Hellcat, because I’m here to stay, and now you have to live with me, too.”
She groaned but kissed me again.
“Well, I have a whole new life to build now, and I’m done here, so what do you want to do first?”
I leaned down, kissing her hard as she pressed hard against me.
“You know, I have this really fast car now,” she said.
“Oh really?”
“Yeah, do you want to see how fast I can get us back home and into bed?”
I smiled, already pulling her to the front door. “Absolutely yes. You have ten minutes before I start undressing you and it doesn’t matter to me if that starts in the car or in the apartment.”
She revved the engine, the vibration sending a shot of adrenaline through me, but it wasn’t just from the car or knowing she was about to take off at a ridiculous speed.
It was the realization that I finally found where I belong in my life. In all the chaos, I found my home, and to my surprise, it was never a place.
It was her.
EPILOGUE
SCOUT
The sun dippedlow on the horizon, casting the entire track in a warm glow. Chase stood by my car, waiting for me.
It was all so familiar. The roar of engines, the smell of gasoline, the electrifying atmosphere of a race night.
But tonight was different.
Tonight was the first night of my official race season as one of Holt Racing’s drivers. It was the start of my career as a racer. I knew tonight's race would, hopefully, be the start of hundreds of races around the country, and maybe around the world, if Holt let me do any other type of racing for him.
My career had taken off, and somehow, in the mess of getting to this point, I found Chase.
Chase, who had been there every second of every race day, training day, and everything in between. Who proudly told everyone he could that his girlfriend races cars for a living, and was most recently learning everything he could about engines so he could be more involved on race days. The crew was happy to teach him, too. He still went out with them on their guys’ nights.
Somehow that rich, rude, perfect man from the first night at the races was the perfect guy for me all along.
He waved me over to the trailer, the box in his hand sparking my curiosity as I headed his way.
“Is that for me?” I asked, the neon green bow on top matching the Hellcat’s color perfectly.
“It is.”
“And what is it for?”
He chewed on his bottom lip, his cheeks turning the slightest shade of red. I had never seen Chase nervous, but the sudden uncertainty on his face made my heart melt.
“I thought you might want some options, so I had this made. If you don’t want it, that’s okay. I won’t be offended at all, but I just…wanted you to know it was an option.
My eyebrows furrowed as I opened the box.
The black racing suit was folded up neatly, all my sponsorship patches clearly on the sleeve. I pulled it out further, seeing my name on the front in the same neon green color as the bow.
“A new racing suit? I mean, I always love to have more, but I do have one right now. I’m not sure what you mean by options.”
He grabbed it, turning it around and showing me the back. My stomach flipped as I saw the last name ‘Parker’ in neon green block letters across the back. Unlike the current one I wore, where that space stayed blank.
