No.

I wasn’t going to ask more about it.

I didn’t think he didn’t care about my life. Why should I care about his?

A sleek, modified car slowed as it reached the garage. I almost thought it was turning in until it took off, shooting down towards the crew instead.

“Who was that? Finally your boyfriend possibly showing up?”

“No, that wasn’t him. And he isn’t going to come tonight. Does a couple always have to be together?”

“Not at all, but with a girl like you, I would assume a guy would want to be with his girl on a Saturday night. Unless you didn’t invite him here.”

“This isn’t one of your fancy galas. I don’t send out formal invites. He could stop by if he had the time.”

I looked down the road, hearing the engine of Jax’s Charger start up.

“Interesting. And you didn’t want to go with him wherever he was going?”

“No, he likes to go to clubs and parties, I don’t, so I stay behind. Problem solved.”

He cocked an eyebrow, apparently expecting me to say more, but I wasn’t going to continue talking about Jesse.

“What about you? No girlfriend to hang out with?”

“Not a chance of me having a girlfriend. I understand that I can’t, and won’t, be spending all of my time with one girl. And unlike your boyfriend, I don't have the heart to lead a girl on.”

“Rich boys don’t have hearts,” I said, smiling.

He smiled back, pushing off the car as the Charger came closer. He leaned down until his forehead was nearly resting on mine. “It looks like we finally agree on something.”

For a moment we stood there, neither of us moving until the crew was about to pull in. I stepped back, taking a deep gulp of cool air, not daring to look at him again.

A half hour later,we were gathered around the fire behind the garage. Chase was still there, sitting next to me without a word, and so far, I hadn’t said a word to him.

I took a long sip of my drink. The cocktails Ash made were always strong, and normally I didn’t drink too much but tonight, I didn’t care.

“So,” Fox said, leaning forward. “Now that you two are getting along, this might be a good time to let you know you’re going to have to be the one to work on his car,” he said, looking at me.

“What? Why me?”

“Because we are all booked up and you’re the only one with some free time. I know you have your races with Holt to worry about, but Chase has agreed to be flexible on when it gets done.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yes, and one more thing.”

“What?”

“He wants to help. He asked to learn more about the mechanics part and I already agreed before I realized I didn’t have enough time.”

“Fox!”

“Scout!” he yelled back with a small laugh. “You can handle one guy asking questions about a car for a week or two while you show him a few things. I already told him not to bother you or purposefully try to piss you off, and that he has to listen to what you say. Think of it as a win in your favor. Now you get to be all high and mighty because you know what you are doing and he doesn’t.”

“But I would also have to deal with him for weeks. Not days, Fox.Weeks.”

“I’m sorry. I know you’re going to be a little upset about this, but we need the help Scout. With Jax gone for the charity half the time, me trying to keep up with Ash, Holt, and her racing, and all of us picking up more with you needing to be preparing for your races at Holt, we really need the help.”
