Chase took three more steadying breaths before adjusting his jeans and pulling back onto the road. If it took us too long, it would bring up too many questions, and I was glad he seemed okay with that.

“You’re fucking amazing, and I will be coming back to your apartment tonight to give you orgasms until you pass out,” he said, his breath steady again.

I laughed, smiling as he pulled into the diner, adjusting his jeans and shirt the rest of the way as he watched me. “I mean, I can’t say no to that.”

“Somehow, you keep surprising me. I thought picking you up from jail was a shock. Who would have thought that came after?”

“Like I said, we did discuss payment beforehand,” I said, liking the way his hand rested on my lower back.

“I hope for my sake you have some sort of need for a lawyer again in the future.”

I turned, making sure he didn’t look like he had just been given a blowjob in the car and then flipping the mirror down to check myself. “I don’t think that has to be theonlytime I ever do that.”

“Really? Decided you don’t hate it?”

“No, I don’t think I do,” I said, as he pulled open the door to the diner for me. “Actually, I think I could enjoy doing that again very soon.”

TWENTY-EIGHT

SCOUT

The next officialrace day with Holt came before I felt ready. The Holt Racing car I’ve been using was more prepared than I was, but it didn’t feel as much of a comfort as I hoped.

The last two weeks had been nothing but Chase, and catching up at the garage. I barely got time to practice, but I hoped it was fine. We were back at Holt’s track for this race and I knew it well, so there was nothing for me to be too worried about. If I placed in the top five again, I would be guaranteed a spot at the races next week in Las Vegas. With this race being pushed back, we now had two back-to-back weeks planned.

Now, if I went and placed in the race in Vegas, Holt agreed to keep me on the team permanently, which meant I would be traveling around the country during the race season, getting to race professionally.

My anxiety spiked, the idea that my entire life goal was on the line again making me nervous. Today was only five races, which meant five races to win the entire day, and three needed to place enough to move on. Ash came over, handing me my race suit and helmet.

“Are you sure you don’t want a last name on this?” she asked, holding up the race suit. “It’s so much cuter with a last name.”

I shook my head, looking at the back with her. “No, thanks. The name Allen can die with my dad because there is no way I am bringing any light or success to it.”

“You could always use Holt,” she said, shrugging. “And I’m sure any of the guys would let you use theirs.”

“I think I’d rather it be blank. Those aren’t mine, and I’d rather not use Holt and let everyone think he has a long lost red-headed daughter that he isn’t telling people about.”

She laughed harder, pulling me into a hug. “I would take you as an adopted sister any day of the week.”

“Until your dad offers, I’ll just be over here as Scout and nothing more.”

“You know, they are going to need a name to add to the boards. Your name is already going to be posted. If you want to change it for the public, you’re going to need to do it soon. Especially after you win in Vegas.”

“IfI win in Vegas.”

“Nope, I said it exactly how I meant it. You’ll kick ass today and in Vegas. Come on, suit up so we can get you on the track.”

Everyone crowded around my car while I went into the trailer to get dressed. Before I could even shut the door, someone was tapping on it.

“Scout?”

“Yes?” I asked, pushing the door open a little to see Chase.

He was smiling, looking as good as he had the first time he came to my race, but this time, I was a little more appreciative of it. I pushed open the door, pulling him in fast. The crew was on the other side of the trailer and wouldn’t see him come in, but I wasn’t going to risk him standing out there too long.

As soon as the door shut, he grabbed my face, pulling me in hard and kissing me.

“You ready to win?”
