Kane smiled as he sighed. “They grow up fast.”

Yeah, I was just figuring that out.

A call came through on Kane’s radio attached to his shoulder and he responded to it.

“Duty calls. “Good seein’ you, man,” Kane said to Wyatt as they quickly hugged once more.

“You comin’ by tomorrow for Mom’s surprise party?” Wyatt asked.

“Wouldn’t miss it.” Kane smiled then turned my direction. “It was nice meeting you Whitney.”

“You, too.”

He was starting to walk away but turned back. “Hey, have you heard from Remi?”

Wyatt shook his head. “Not recently, why?”

“I’ve been trying to get a hold of him since all that shit went down with Ruby.”

“What went down with Ruby?” Wyatt asked.

“She had some sort of…” Kane paused before continuing, “episode during a show. It was all over the internet.”

“Wait, Ruby Sky?” I asked.

“Yeah, well, Ruby Rhodes. Her middle name is Sky,” Wyatt explained.

“You know her?” I asked.

“She’s Remi’s little sister.”

This man would never cease to amaze me. He’s related to JJ Briggs, Mikey’s hero. His SIL’s are Sasha Nelson and Josie Clarke. And, now, I find out his best friend’s little sister is Ruby Sky.

“Do you know her?” he asked.

“I’ve met her a few times at events. She always seemed really sweet. I was surprised when…”

“Yeah, it’s not like her.” Kane’s jaw ticked, and I could see that he seemed genuinely upset.

I wondered if what he felt was more than just the affection of a friend’s little sister.

“I haven’t been able to get a hold of Remi to see how she’s doing,” Kane explained.

“I think he’s at some training in Montana. He mentioned it the last time we talked at Christmas,” Wyatt explained. “He said he’d be out of touch for a little bit, but he’d be back in California in time for fire season.”

Kane nodded. “See you guys tomorrow.”

As he walked away, I asked, “Did Kane and Ruby ever hook up when you guys were younger?”

“What? No.” Wyatt shook his head. “She’s a kid. That would be…” He cringed. “That would be weird. No.”

Ruby Sky was my age. I knew that because we’d both had our 21st in New York in the same week.

Wyatt turned his attention back to setting up our stuff as I added my age to the con column in the list of Reasons Why Wyatt and I Wouldn’t Work Out.

Before this weekend, I’d thought the biggest obstacle had been the fact that he never wanted to have kids and I had three. Now, I’d added two more strikes.

After spending twenty-four hours here I’d made up my mind that I wanted to raise the kids in a small town. Not a suburb. A small town. Ideally, Wishing Well, although that would be up to the kids. I knew that Wyatt never wanted to live in a small town again. Strike two.
