“If you say so, son. I'm looking forward to this dinner. It should be interesting.”

I took a glass from the cupboard, put some ice in it, and poured some scotch. I wasn’t supposed to make this awkward, but after what had happened on Friday night, things were definitely complicated. The sounds of Laura’s moans were imprinted on my mind. She’d nearly come when I’d spanked her ass. I had to stop thinking about her that way, though. My family had been trying to set me up with someone for years, and it never worked. The less they knew about my private life, the better.

Rupert was chasing Maja around the garden, and she was giggling like crazy. James was on his phone, as always, when Andrew spotted me standing on the patio. He might as well be my twin, because we had such similar features.

“Prime Minister.” He mocked me, as usual.

My brother had started as a model, and then slowly he’d moved to the film industry. He’d started small, but then one of the directors had seen something in him and cast him in a small budget movie that blew up. Andrew had become famous overnight, and several big roles had followed after. His good looks definitely helped.

“So, how have you been? I heard you got a new nanny? Mother is already planning Rupert’s wedding with that girl.”

“Mother has been planning all our weddings since we left university.” I sipped my drink as Apolonia materialised right in front of us.

She was Andrew’s assistant, and she followed him everywhere, along with the entourage of security agents. I really didn’t get why this beautiful and smart woman was still working for my dickhead brother, even after-hours.

“Spencer, you’re looking sharp. How are things with you? I’ve been following the news, and I'm surprised that your party is refusing to back your new social reform. It’s very progressive,” she said, completely ignoring her boss and giving me kisses on both cheeks.

Apolonia had been in the UK for the past fifteen years, and her Eastern European accent was still pretty distinctive. She hated when my brother teased her about it, but she knew how to push his buttons. Both her parents were Polish. They’d emigrated when Apolonia was in high school.

“Apolonia, you were supposed to be playing with Maja. Why are you interrupting us?” Andrew rudely interjected.

If I didn’t know my brother, I would have thought he had it bad for his assistant, but he always claimed they only worked together, and there was nothing between them. Apolonia was too smart to get involved with a player like Andrew anyway.

“We were having a girly chat when Rupert started chasing her around, so I thought I’d come over here and annoy you a little.” She turned to face me once again. “The housing reform. What’s up with that?”

“Nothing, but Jeremy is working on a few MPs, so it should pass in the next vote,” I said.

“Does Laura normally come late? Maybe you should call her. How is she even getting here?” My mother carried trays with some canapés and other finger foods.

My stomach growled. I glanced at my watch. Laura was late by over twenty minutes.

“She’s probably taking the Tube,” I said.

“You didn’t send a car for her?” She frowned at me.

“Mother, why would Spencer hire a limo for his nanny? She just works for him, so technically she shouldn’t even be invited to this dinner,” Andrew stated, then scrolled through his phone.

“I second that. She’s the nanny, and she's used to taking the Tube,” James chimed in.

My mother shook her head.

“Ignore him, Sue. He’s just grumpy because he wasn’t cast in the new James Bond movie.” Apolonia gave Andrew a sweet smile.

“I should fire you, and you weren’t invited either.” He stared at her hand that was still gripping my arm.

“Well, your mother delivered the invitation in person when you were arguing with Sandra, so lay off with the attitude, boss.” Apolonia popped a canapé into her mouth and gave us both a smile before she talked to our mother about something else.

“She has you by the balls.” I chuckled while briefly staring at Apolonia’s round arse, just to wind him up a bit more.

“She's the best, and she knows I can’t afford to fire her,” he muttered.

I was just about to tease him a bit more about Apolonia when I spotted Laura, who’d finally arrived. She was talking to Mum in the kitchen, but she didn’t seem like herself. I instantly felt like something was wrong.

“My nanny is here. I should go say hi.” I marched inside, clenching my fists. I paused when I took in her puffy red eyes.

“Hey, Laura, what’s wrong?” I wanted to kill the motherfucker who’d dared to make her cry. Maybe I should have sent Range Rover over. The Tube wasn’t safe in my opinion.

“Nothing, it’s nothing. I’m very sorry that I'm late.” She avoided my gaze.
